Chapter 13: Footsteps Across the Courtyard

The night air was crisp and clear, carrying the scent of damp earth and late-autumn leaves across the sprawling estate courtyard. The amber lanterns cast long, wavering reflections on the cobblestone pathways as Julian and Clara walked side by side toward the carriage house. Neither spoke; the heavy weight of the evening’s revelations hung between them like an invisible barrier, forcing a reckoning they could no longer postpone.

When they reached the heavy oak doors of the carriage house, Julian raised his hand and knocked twice—a firm, respectful rap that bore no resemblance to the commanding interrogations of the past few days.

A moment later, the deadbolt clicked, and Mrs. Higgins opened the door. The older housekeeper looked at them with a guarded, neutral expression, her arms folded over her apron.

""Mr. and Mrs. Vance,"" Higgins said, her voice polite yet cool. ""Late hours for visitors in the staff quarters.""

""We need to speak with Elena, Higgins,"" Julian said quietly, stepping forward just enough to be seen in the warm light spilling from the doorway.

From behind the older housekeeper, Elena appeared. She had changed out of her grey uniform into a simple dark sweater and trousers, her dark hair left down in soft waves around her shoulders. She looked tired, but her posture was resolute, carrying a quiet dignity that instantly commanded the room.

""Mr. Vance. Mrs. Vance,"" Elena acknowledged evenly, keeping a safe distance from the threshold.

Clara stepped forward, her gold hoop earrings catching the porch light. Her face was flushed, her lips parted slightly as she struggled to find the right words—a rare struggle for a woman accustomed to having an immediate retort for everything.

""Elena,"" Clara began, her voice cracking slightly before she steadied it. ""I... I wanted to apologize. For the way I acted in the foyer. For the accusation. And for..."" She hesitated, pressing a hand against her chest. ""For striking you.""

Elena looked at Clara, her dark eyes searching the other woman's face for any sign of manipulation or lingering arrogance. She found none; Clara looked genuinely humbled, broken by the realization of how easily she had been weaponized against an innocent person.

""An apology doesn't undo what happened, Mrs. Vance,"" Elena said softly, her voice steady and devoid of malice. ""The humiliation of standing there accused of something I didn't do... that doesn't just disappear because someone else turned out to be the criminal.""

""I know,"" Clara whispered, looking down at the stone steps. ""I let my fear and my temper blind me. I allowed Marcus to use my pride as a weapon against you. There is nothing I can say that will make that right, but I want you to know that your position here is safe—if you choose to stay. And a formal retraction and financial compensation will be provided by the estate.""
