Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Daylight

Christmas morning arrived without joy. Julian spent the hours performing the role of the doting patriarch, staging photographs of the twins beside the glittering tree to post on his corporate social media pages. Emma smiled when the camera faced her, maintaining the facade of domestic bliss while her mind calculated escape vectors.

By noon, Julian announced he had an "emergency investor call" and retreated into his soundproof home office, locking the frosted glass door behind him. Emma moved instantly. She strapped the twins into their dual stroller and grabbed her diaper bag, packed not with baby clothes, but with essential legal documents, their birth certificates, passports, and hard drives.

Instead of taking the elevator to the lobby where the concierge might report her departure, she took the service lift down to the parking garage. Waiting in an idling sedan by the concrete pillars was Clara, her former university roommate and now one of the city's fiercest family law attorneys.

Emma opened the passenger door, sliding the heavy drive into Clara’s hands. "Tell me I’m not crazy," Emma said, her voice shaking as she secured the infants in the back seat.

Clara plugged the drive into her dashboard terminal, scrolling through the offshore transactions Emma had pulled the night before. Clara’s expression shifted from professional focus to pure horror. "Emma, he isn't just moving money," Clara whispered, looking back at her friend with wide eyes. "He’s selling this penthouse. The closing date is listed for December 30th. He sold it fully furnished, and the buyer signed a nondisclosure agreement. Julian is flying out of the country in five days—and he’s taking sole legal custody of the twins with him."
