Chapter 15 - The First Sunrise

Three months later, the spring sun broke over the skyline, casting warm, golden rays through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The Christmas tree was long gone, replaced by colorful playmats, soft wooden toys, and the cheerful sounds of twins babbling in the bright morning light.
Emma sat on the floor with Leo and Maya, watching them roll across the rug toward a cluster of soft building blocks. The divorce was finalized; the criminal trial for Julian and Siera had ended in maximum sentences for fraud and perjury. Every penny Julian had tried to hide was now securely locked in an irrevocable trust for the children, managed solely by Emma, who had recently accepted a partnership offer at Clara’s firm to head forensic investigations.
She had reclaimed her maiden name, her career, and her life.
The doorbell rang softly. Emma walked over and opened it to find a courier holding a small registered parcel from the state penitentiary. It bore Julian’s inmate identification number.

Emma looked down at the package. Her hands didn't shake. Her heart didn't race. She felt no anger, no pain, not even the lingering sting of betrayal. She was entirely free of him.
Without opening it, Emma walked over to the kitchen island, opened the trash chute, and dropped the package into the dark void below, listening as it fell away forever. She turned back toward her children, stepping into the sunlight, ready for the life they were going to build together.
