Chapter 12 - The Race Against the Law

The shock hit Emma like cold seawater. While Julian was orchestrating his corporate betrayal, his automated legal machine had continued forward without him. The emergency psychiatric petition had been signed by an corrupt on-call magistrate hours before Julian’s arrest. The police were already on their way to the penthouse to enforce an involuntary commitment order, believing a mentally unstable mother had left two infants unattended.
"We have to get back," Emma gasped, her heart pounding with terror. "The nanny doesn't have legal authority to turn away Child Protective Services!"
"I'm calling the District Attorney right now," Clara said, already dialing frantically as they rushed through the Plaza’s lobby into the bitter night air. "Arthur, we need your legal team to reach the night judge to vacate the warrant!"
"Consider it done," Arthur said, his limousine pulling up to the curb. "Get in. We’ll cut through the park."
The blizzard had intensified, sheets of white snow blinding the windshield as the driver sped through Manhattan’s slick streets. Emma sat in the back, clutching her knees, praying to every deity she knew. Julian had built a machine designed to grind her into dust, and even in his chains, the cogs were still turning. If CPS took Leo and Maya into the system before the warrant was vacated, the legal battle to retrieve them could take months. She couldn't let them spend a single night away from her arms.

As the car skidded around the corner of their street, Emma’s worst fears materialized: red and blue emergency lights flashed violently against the falling snow, illuminating the entrance of her building.
