Chapter 9 - The Library Vault

The private library smelled heavily of old leather, expensive cigar smoke, and the metallic tang of fresh ozone from the recent explosion. Moonlight poured through the towering arched windows, casting long, jagged shadows across the Persian rugs and the rows of first-edition classics. Elena sprinted toward the far corner of the room, her red evening gown trailing behind her like a streak of fresh blood against the dark mahogany bookshelves.

"Here," Elena breathed out, her chest heaving as she dropped to her knees in front of a massive, floor-to-ceiling bookshelf filled with heavy leather-bound encyclopedias.

Agent Miller knelt beside her immediately, his tactical flashlight illuminating a small, unassuming bronze lock embedded in the woodwork behind a copy of War and Peace. "Is this the manual override?"

"No," Elena said sharply. She reached out with a trembling, ring-adorned hand and pulled down a heavy faux-leather volume titled The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire. Beneath it lay a sleek, glass biometric scanner glowing with a faint, pulsing blue light. "The manual override was wired to the power grid, which Julian just blew up. But the biometric scanner runs on an independent, military-grade titanium backup battery. It requires my fingerprint and voice authorization to open the secondary bulkhead."

Agent Miller pressed his back against the bookshelf, keeping his service pistol raised and pointed squarely at the heavy mahogany double doors of the library. "Do it now. We don't know how far ahead of us Vance is."

Elena didn't waste a second. She pressed her right thumb firmly against the glowing glass scanner. A sharp, high-pitched beep echoed through the quiet room, followed by a mechanical whirring sound as the digital screen flashed green: BIOMETRIC VERIFIED. ACCESS GRANTED TO PRIMARY VAULT.

Suddenly, with a heavy, grinding groan of stressed steel, the entire wall of bookshelves began to slide inward, revealing a dark, descending stone staircase lined with emergency LED strip lights that cast a sickly amber glow down into the bowels of the earth. A rush of cold, damp air billowed up from the subterranean depths, carrying with it the faint, unmistakable sound of a high-powered engine revving in the distance.

"He's already in the subterranean cart," Elena whispered, horror gripping her heart. "The electric transport car takes less than ninety seconds to reach the private hangar at the end of the runway."

"Move," Agent Miller ordered, stepping into the dark opening and sweeping his flashlight down the stone steps. "Stay directly behind me."

Elena clutched Lily tighter against her chest, stepping over the threshold into the damp, subterranean stairwell. The heavy door began to slide slowly back into place behind them with a muffled, echoing thud. They descended rapidly, the amber lights flickering as the air grew colder and the sound of the idling jet engine grew louder with every single step.

They reached the bottom of the staircase, stepping out onto a smooth, polished concrete floor that stretched down a long, dimly lit concrete tunnel. But right as Agent Miller took three paces forward to secure the area, a sudden, blinding flash of light cut through the tunnel from the far end, accompanied by a sharp click that made Agent Miller instantly freeze in his tracks.

Elena stopped dead in her tracks, looking past the agent's shoulder, only to see Julian standing fifty feet away beside an open steel blast door, pointing a heavy, military-grade thermal detonator directly at the structural support pillars of the tunnel ceiling.
