Chapter 4 - The Grip Tightens

The sharp sting of Julian’s fingers biting into her bare skin sent a jolt of white-hot adrenaline through Elena’s veins. She refused to give him the satisfaction of a cry, her jaw clenching so hard her teeth ached. The digital glow of the emergency custody order on her phone screen illuminated the dark, desperate panic swimming in her eyes. Lily’s high-pitched screams echoed off the polished gold trim of the hallway, a raw sound of absolute terror that seemed to strip away the thin veneer of their high-society existence.

"Let go of me, Julian," Elena commanded, her voice dropping into a chilling, dangerous register that made even him hesitate for a fraction of a second. "If you bruise me before we reach the stairs, the entire gala downstairs will see what kind of monster hides behind your expensive tailored suits."

Julian’s eyes flicked downward to the red marks forming on her pale arm. For a second, a flicker of raw panic crossed his face—not from guilt, but from the terrifying prospect of public exposure. His grip loosened just enough for Elena to wrench her arm free, the friction of the silk gown hissing against his palm. She stumbled back a half-step, her backless red dress sweeping across the immaculate white oak flooring like a pool of fresh blood.

"You think they care?" Julian whispered bitterly, his chest heaving as he adjusted his crooked bow tie with frantic, trembling fingers. "Downstairs, they are drinking champagne bought with my grandfather's blood money. They care about appearances, Elena, and right now, the appearance is that a hysterical mother is trying to abduct my legal heir."

Elena shifted Lily’s weight higher against her chest. The little girl was shaking violently, her tiny fingers clutching the heavy diamond necklace so tightly the platinum chain dug into the soft skin of Elena’s collarbone. The warmth of the child's tears soaked straight through the red sequins, a heavy, heartbreaking reminder of what was truly at stake.

"Your heir," Elena spat out the words like venom. "That is all she has ever been to you. Not a daughter, not a living soul with a heart beating in her chest, but a trophy to secure your seat on the board of trustees."

Before Julian could retaliate with another crushing blow, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the far end of the East Wing hallway. Both of them froze instantly. The private service elevator bell chimed twice, indicating that the heavy iron-mesh doors were sliding open. Footsteps—heavy, deliberate, and entirely unfamiliar—began to march down the carpeted corridor toward them, moving with the cold, unstoppable rhythm of an approaching executioner.

Julian’s head snapped toward the sound, his face draining of all remaining color as a slow, terrifying realization washed over his features. "They weren't supposed to be here until midnight," he muttered, his voice trembling.

Elena spun around to face the approaching footsteps, her heart slamming against her ribs, only to see a towering figure in a tailored black trench coat stepping out of the shadows, holding a Manila envelope stamped with the federal seal.
