Chapter 1 - The Escalation

The crystal chandelier overhead hummed with a low, expensive vibration, casting jagged reflections across the pristine white walls and gleaming gold trim of the grand hallway. Elena stood rigidly in her backless, blood-red evening gown, the heavy fabric pooling around her satin heels like liquid rust. Her fingers, adorned with a single heavy heirloom ruby, were clamped firmly around the warm, small hand of three-year-old Lily. The toddler’s brown pigtails were slightly disheveled, her white satin dress spotted with a smear of chocolate from the evening’s charity gala downstairs.

Julian burst from the mahogany library doors twenty feet away, his black bow tie hanging askew against his crisp white collar. His breath came in ragged, furious gasps as his leather shoes hammered against the imported oak floorboards.

"Give me my daughter!" Julian shouted, his voice cracking with a desperate, razor-thin fury that bounced off the high vaulted ceilings.

Elena didn't flinch, though a muscle twitched violently beneath her left eye. She hauled Lily upward, scooping the weeping toddler into her arms and pressing the trembling, pearl-bead-trimmed chest hard against her own red-sequined bodice.

"You always choose her!" Elena screamed back, her voice shaking with years of systemic poison and unheeded warnings. "You chose her ghost, Julian! You chose her over us every single second of every godforsaken day!"

Lily buried her wet face into the crook of Elena's neck, her little fingers clawing desperately at the expensive diamond necklace that rested against her mother’s collarbone. The child's tears soaked through the silk, hot and frantic.

"Daddy, daddy!" Lily sobbed, her small body wracking with heavy, rhythmic convulsions of sheer terror.

Julian stopped three paces short, his hands raised in pleading, desperate claws. His eyes were wide, bloodshot, and completely unhinged. He reached out to grab Lily’s ankle, his fingers missing the hem of the white satin dress by a mere fraction of an inch.

Lily turned her tear-streaked face directly toward the hidden security camera lens mounted near the crown molding, her eyes wide with a horrific, preemptive understanding of the devastation to come.

"I'm scared," Lily whimpered, her tiny voice echoing down the corridor.

Julian lowered his hands slowly, a dark, chilling smile breaking through his pale lips. "You think you can take her away from this house, Elena? Check the foyer table. I already locked the iron gates, and the police are five minutes away for kidnapping."
