Chapter 12 - The Midnight Runway

The deafening roar of the private jet’s twin turbine engines vibrated straight through the soles of Elena’s satin shoes, shaking the asphalt of Runway 4 as the sleek, black-and-silver aircraft began to accelerate down the tarmac. Gale-force winds whipped across the open airfield, tearing at Elena’s long dark hair and snapping the heavy fabric of her backless red evening gown wildly against her legs.

"Look!" Elena screamed over the deafening whine of the jet, pointing a trembling hand toward the runway.

Agent Miller shoved Julian forcefully toward the backup federal agents standing beside an idling black SUV, then spun around to track the moving aircraft with his tactical flashlight. The jet was picking up speed at an alarming rate, its landing lights cutting two blinding white swaths through the foggy midnight mist as it raced toward the far perimeter fence of the estate.

"Control tower, this is Special Agent Miller!" he shouted into his shoulder radio, his voice strained against the wind. "Order the runway lights to kill immediately! Do not let that Gulfstream clear the tree line!"

"Negative, Agent!" a frantic voice crackled back through the static of the radio. "We tried overriding the grid, but the onboard flight computer has been hardwired into an autonomous satellite relay. It’s operating on an independent military protocol! We can't shut it down from the tower!"

Julian let out a triumphant, howling laugh from the ground as the backup agents forced him into the back of the SUV. The metallic clink of his handcuffs echoed faintly over the roar of the engines. "You lost, Elena!" Julian yelled, straining against the door frame before they slammed it shut. "My mother is already airborne! She has the bearer bonds, the offshore keys, and my legal heir! You can keep the empty mansion and the red dress, but you will never see my daughter grow up!"

Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs like a trapped bird. She clutched little Lily so tightly against her chest that the toddler let out a soft, startled squeak. Lily’s brown pigtails were completely unraveled by the wind, her white satin dress whipping around her small legs.

"Mommy, the plane is leaving," Lily cried out, her small, tear-streaked face turning upward toward Elena with a look of absolute, heartbreaking devastation. "Are we going to lose daddy's house?"

"No, baby, we are not losing anything," Elena whispered fiercely, her voice hardening with a resolve that felt like molten iron.

She remembered the secondary keycard she had slipped out of Julian’s desk drawer two nights ago—not the biometric pass for the tunnel, but the master override key for the airfield’s emergency interceptor vehicle parked inside the maintenance hangar fifty yards to their left. Julian had always kept an unmarked, high-speed perimeter interceptor hidden there for times when he needed to make an unscheduled, unrecorded flight under the cover of darkness.

Without a word to Agent Miller, Elena turned on her high-heeled satin shoes and sprinted toward the open doors of the maintenance hangar, the red sequins of her gown catching the flashing red beacons of the patrol cars in a blinding display of defiance.

Agent Miller shouted something behind her, but his voice was completely swallowed by the deafening roar of the jet lifting its nose off the asphalt and soaring gracefully up into the dark, starless sky. Elena pushed open the heavy sliding metal doors of the hangar, her breath hitching as she laid her eyes on the sleek, midnight-black interceptor vehicle idling quietly inside, its headlights glowing like predatory eyes in the dark.
