Chapter 7 - The Hidden Mother

The word hung in the freezing air of the grand hallway like a dropped guillotine blade. Mother. Elena stared down at Julian, her vision blurring with a mixture of pure fury and blinding terror. For six years of marriage, Julian had sworn up and down that his mother—the infamous, reclusive Beatrice Vance—had died in a private plane crash in the Swiss Alps long before they even met. He had worn a black band on his lapel every anniversary, spun elaborate, tear-jerking tales of her tragic demise, and kept a locked shrine in the east wing that he claimed was dedicated to her memory.

"She's dead," Elena whispered, her voice trembling violently as she clutched Lily closer to her chest. The toddler whimpered, sensing the suffocating wave of deceit crashing down around them. "You told me she died twenty years ago, Julian. You swore on your father's grave."

Julian let out a harsh, barking laugh, straining against the heavy steel handcuffs that Agent Miller had just locked securely around his wrists. "My mother never dies, Elena," Julian sneered, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "Beatrice Vance doesn't fly in commercial crashes. She owns the banks that fund them. And right now, she is walking up the steps of that private jet with a forged passport, a multi-million-dollar bearer bond, and my legal granddaughter."

Agent Miller’s jaw tightened into a hard, unyielding line. He grabbed Julian by the collar of his ruined tuxedo shirt and yanked him upright, shoving him hard toward the backup agent standing by the elevator.

"Lock him in the service car downstairs and notify the airport control tower to ground all outbound private aircraft immediately," Agent Miller commanded, his voice sharp as a razor. He turned his piercing gaze back to Elena, his tone softening just a fraction. "Mrs. Vance, where is the private access tunnel that leads from this mansion directly to the airfield? Your husband’s security clearance is locked out, but the system logs show your biometric profile is still active in the master terminal."

Elena stared at the federal agent, her mind racing at breakneck speed. The private tunnel. Julian had built it three years ago under the guise of a "wine cellar expansion," but she had stumbled upon the reinforced steel biometric door behind the library bookshelf only six months ago, right after discovering Julian’s first offshore bank statement. She had kept that secret locked deep inside her own mind, knowing that knowledge was the only leverage she would ever hold against the Vance empire.

"It's behind the mahogany bookshelves in the library," Elena answered, her voice dropping into a fierce, resolute whisper. She looked down at little Lily, whose tear-streaked face pressed against her diamond-encrusted necklace. "And I know the exact passcode to override the primary bulkhead."

Agent Miller nodded decisively. "Move. We don't have ten seconds to waste."

Elena turned on her stiletto heels, her backless red evening gown swirling around her legs like liquid fire as she sprinted toward the library doors, clutching her daughter with every ounce of strength she possessed. But as she slammed her palm against the heavy mahogany wood to push it open, a loud, ear-splitting explosion echoed from deep beneath the estate, shaking the entire foundation of the mansion and plunging the grand hallway into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
