Chapter 13 - The Interceptor

The interior of the maintenance hangar smelled heavily of aviation fuel, hot rubber, and stale coffee. Dust motes danced in the harsh overhead fluorescent lights, casting a sterile, clinical glow over the sleek, midnight-black interceptor vehicle parked dead center on the polished concrete floor. The vehicle’s engine idled with a low, expensive purr that resonated deep within Elena’s chest.

Elena clutched little Lily tighter against her ribcage, her bare arms aching from the sheer physical strain of holding the toddler while navigating the rough terrain. She rushed to the driver’s side of the interceptor, her fingers frantically patting the velvet clutch hanging from her wrist until they brushed against the cold, jagged edges of the master override key she had stolen from Julian’s study two nights ago.

Before she could even slide the key into the ignition cylinder, the heavy metal side door of the hangar slid open with a loud, metallic screech. Agent Miller strode inside, his heavy tactical boots hitting the floor with rapid, disciplined thuds, his service weapon still holstered but his hand hovering protectively near his belt.

"Mrs. Vance! What the hell do you think you're doing?" Agent Miller demanded, his voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls. He stepped directly between Elena and the driver's door, blocking her path with unyielding federal authority. "That aircraft is already airborne. You cannot chase a Gulfstream jet in a land vehicle. Leave it to the air patrol units; they've already scrambled two F-16 interceptors from the nearby military base to force that plane down."

"F-16s?" Elena laughed bitterly, a harsh, humorless sound that lacked any trace of warmth. She stared up into the agent's hardened eyes, her jaw clenched so tightly her temples throbbed. "You think Beatrice Vance cares about military interceptors? That woman has bribed generals, senators, and foreign ministers for four decades. By the time those jets get authorization to fire warning shots, her plane will have crossed the international maritime border into international airspace, and Lily will be gone forever."

Agent Miller’s expression tightened into a hard, skeptical line. "Even if that's true, Mrs. Vance, I cannot allow a civilian and a three-year-old child to embark on a high-speed highway pursuit. It’s a violation of federal protocol, and it’s suicidal."

"Protocol?" Elena stepped forward, her red stiletto heel clicking sharply against the concrete, forcing the federal agent to take a half-step back. The blood-red silk of her backless evening gown swirled around his tactical boots like a pool of fresh blood. "My husband spent six years treating me like a prisoner in my own home, stealing my life, and plotting to steal my child. You want to talk about protocol while my daughter is being smuggled out of the country by a ghost? Move out of my way, Agent Miller, or I will run you over with this vehicle right now."

The sheer, unbridled fury in Elena’s voice carried an absolute, terrifying weight that made the veteran federal investigator pause. He looked down at little Lily, who was peering over Elena’s shoulder with large, tear-filled brown eyes, her tiny hands clutching the diamond necklace so hard her knuckles were stark white.

Agent Miller let out a long, heavy sigh, running a hand over his short dark hair. He stepped aside, reaching into his tactical vest to pull out a secure satellite radio handset, which he thrust firmly into Elena’s free hand.

"Take this," Agent Miller commanded, his voice dropping into a hard, pragmatic register. "If you cross the state line, patch this frequency directly into the dashboard console. I’ll coordinate the ground pursuit with the state troopers. Don't do anything stupid, Elena. Get your daughter back."

Elena snatched the radio from his hand without a word of thanks, pulled open the heavy door of the interceptor, and slid awkwardly into the driver's seat with Lily clutched securely in her lap. She slammed the key into the ignition, twisted it hard, and jammed her foot down onto the accelerator, launching the black vehicle out of the hangar doors and straight onto the deserted service road leading toward the perimeter highway.
