Chapter 7 - The Family Debt

The storm outside seemed to pause for a brief, heavy second, leaving only the sound of rain drumming against the slate roof.

"Uncle?" Lily echoed, backing away from the man in the gray suit. "I don't have an uncle. Dad always said his family was gone."

"Your father likes to rewrite history to protect your fragile worldview," Director Vance said smoothly, keeping his hands visible as he approached slowly. "The truth is, your grandfather embezzled millions from this city's civic development trust back in the nineties. When the federal investigators closed in, he didn't run. He made a deal."

Miller kept his pistol raised, his eyes darting between the director and Julian. "A deal with whom? Organized crime? The syndicates running the municipal contracts?"

"With the government, Detective," Vance replied without breaking eye contact. "My brother—Julian's father—agreed to funnel the stolen capital back into clandestine intelligence operations over thirty years. Julian was just the courier keeping the wheels turning. Until today, when he decided to run off with a bride-to-be and a pocketful of stolen checks to start a new life in South America."

Elena appeared at the top of the stairwell, her white dress stained with mud and soot from the lower floors. She looked frantic, clutching her torn veil in one hand. "Julian! What is happening? Who are these people? The police downstairs are arresting the catering staff!"

"Shut up, Elena," Julian muttered, burying his face in his hands. "It's over. All of it."

"It's not over," Vance said, his voice turning ice-cold as he looked at his brother. "You broke the chain of custody, Julian. You exposed the operation to a local child and a stray detective. The board isn't going to let that slide."

Lily stepped in front of her father, her small frame trembling. "Leave him alone! If you're his brother, why are you threatening him?"

"Because, my dear niece, the world doesn't run on love and weddings," Vance said softly, kneeling down to look her in the eye. "It runs on leverage. And right now, your father is holding the only piece of leverage that keeps our family alive."

He reached out and gently plucked the brown envelope out of Julian's unresisting fingers. Inside, the remaining checks fluttered slightly in the draft.

Miller took a step forward, his gun still leveled at Vance's chest. "Step away from the evidence, Director. You're under arrest for obstruction of justice and conspiracy."

Vance didn't flinch. Instead, he reached into his breast pocket and pulled out his phone, tapping the screen once before holding it up for Miller to see.

The detective's phone buzzed in his pocket. Miller pulled it out with his left hand, glanced at the screen, and the color completely drained from his face.

"No," Miller whispered, his arm dropping slowly to his side. "That's... that's impossible."
