Chapter 4 - The Bell Tower Ascent

"Julian! Stop right there!" Detective Miller shouted, recovering his balance instantly and drawing his service weapon as he gave chase.

The heavy leather soles of Julian's tuxedo shoes slipped on the slick stone stairs winding up into the darkness of the bell tower. He stumbled, catching himself against the rough stone wall, but kept pushing upward, his breathing coming in ragged, painful gasps.

Down below in the main nave, Elena was screaming incoherently at the few remaining wedding guests who were scrambling for the exits. The cathedral doors slammed shut in the fierce wind, trapping the echoing chaos inside.

Lily stood near the altar, her small hands clenched into tight fists inside the pockets of her blue hoodie. She could hear the heavy thud of footsteps echoing from the stone spiral staircase above, followed by Miller's authoritative shouts bouncing off the ancient bell supports.

"Julian Vance! Drop the envelope and put your hands on your head! This staircase is a dead end!" Miller’s voice boomed down from the upper levels.

"Stay back, Miller!" Julian yelled back, his voice strained and frantic. "You don't understand what they'll do to me if I don't give them this money! The debt isn't mine alone!"

Lily ignored the warning and began climbing the stairs after them. Her sneakers made a soft padding sound against the ancient steps, much quieter than the heavy boots of the detective. The air grew colder and smelled of damp stone, old iron, and pigeon feathers.

When Lily reached the top landing, the scene came into sharp focus through the slatted wooden louvers of the bell tower. The storm outside raged furiously, lightning flashing white against the massive bronze bell that hung in the center of the chamber.

Julian was backed up against the outer stone railing, the drop to the cobblestone street far below obscured by sheets of driving rain. Detective Miller stood ten feet away, his gun pointed steadily at the center of Julian's chest.

"It's over, Julian," Miller said, his voice steady. "Hand over the envelope. You can't outrun federal wire fraud."

"You think this is federal?" Julian laughed hysterically, his eyes wild and bloodshot. He held the brown envelope out over the sheer drop of the open balcony. "They're already here, Miller. Look down there."

Lily crept closer from the shadows of the staircase, her breath catching in her throat as she peered over her father's shoulder. Parked right below the bell tower, idling in the pouring rain, were three identical black sedans with their headlights completely turned off.
