Chapter 10 - The Ledger of Secrets

"Clara, please," Julian pleaded, taking a hesitant step forward into the harsh halo of the halogen light. "You don't understand what's in those files. If Vance doesn't secure them, the people backing this operation will wipe us all out."

"They already wiped us out, Julian!" Clara shouted, slamming her hand down on the metal table, sending a cloud of dust into the air. "Look at our daughter! Look at what your lies have done to her childhood! We traded our entire lives, our integrity, and our community for a ghost debt that has no end!"

Director Vance raised his weapon slightly, aiming it straight at the floor near Clara's boots. "Mrs. Vance, I admire your tenacity, but this isn't a negotiation. Hand over the ledger. You can take your daughter and disappear into the witness relocation program by morning."

"Relocation?" Clara let out a harsh, broken laugh. "You call living in constant fear under assumed names while you launder blood money 'witness protection'? I'd rather take my chances with the federal prosecutors."

Lily ran across the concrete floor, throwing her arms around her mother's waist. "Mom! You shouldn't have left the hospital. You're still sick."

Clara dropped the manila folder onto the table and wrapped her arms tightly around Lily, burying her face in the girl's damp brown hair. "I had to do this for you, sweetheart. I couldn't let them take everything we stand for."

"She's right, brother," a new voice echoed from the shadows near the back of the warehouse.

Everyone froze. From between two towering stacks of shipping crates, a tall, heavily scarred man stepped into the light. He wore a dark naval captain's coat and held a heavy-caliber rifle loosely in his right hand.

Director Vance immediately swung his pistol around to face the new arrival, his face tightening with genuine alarm. "Commander Hayes. You weren't supposed to be here until midnight."

"Plans change when a civilian starts leaking classified financial ledgers to local hospitals, Vance," Hayes said, his voice deep and gravelly. He didn't look at Vance; his cold eyes were fixed entirely on Clara and the papers on the table. "The asset is compromised. We have to sanitize the site."

Julian stepped between Hayes and his family, his hands raised in desperate supplication. "No! Leave them out of this, Hayes! They don't know the full routing codes! I'm the only one who can decrypt the final accounts!"

Hayes smiled grimly, raising the barrel of his rifle until it was pointed squarely at Julian's chest. "You had your chance to finish the transfer at the cathedral, Vance. Now, the board has authorized a complete reset."

Lily screamed, throwing her body in front of her father just as Hayes squeezed the trigger.
