Chapter 2 - The Stolen Legacy

The thunderclap shook the cathedral foundations, rattling the stained glass prophets overhead. When the auxiliary emergency lights kicked on with a low hum, Julian was holding the brown envelope, his fingers tearing frantically at the paper flap.

"You shouldn't have opened this, Lily," Julian whispered, his voice dangerously low as he pulled out a thick stack of cashier's checks. Each one bore the signature of the city's historic youth fund.

Elena crossed her arms, her aggressive glare shifting from the child to the man she was about to marry. "Are you out of your mind? Explain this right now, Julian. Why does your daughter have municipal endowment checks in her hand?"

"Mind your own business, Elena," Julian snapped, his eyes darting frantically around the empty pews. The wedding guests were whispering anxiously near the back exits, umbrellas already unfolding.

"My business is becoming a wealthy woman today," Elena fired back, stepping into his personal space. "Not a disgraced outcast married to a criminal. If those checks are stolen, we are both ruined before the ink on the marriage certificate dries."

Lily wiped the rainwater from her eyes, shivering violently in her soaked blue hoodie. "They aren't just stolen checks, Elena. My mom found the ledger in Dad's home office before she went to the hospital. Dad sold the land where the old community center stood. The kids have nowhere to go."

"Your mother talks too much," Julian muttered, shoving the checks into the inner pocket of his tuxedo jacket. He grabbed Lily’s shoulder, his grip tightening with a mixture of fear and desperation. "Listen to me, sweetheart. We are going to walk into the vestry, and we are going to talk about this like a family. Leave the past alone."

"No, Dad!" Lily pulled away, her voice ringing clear in the cavernous space. "Mom collapsed right after she found the papers. The ambulance took her away. While you were standing here in this expensive suit playing dress-up, she was lying on the kitchen floor!"

Julian stopped dead in his tracks. The color vanished from his face entirely, leaving him looking hollow and aged. "The hospital? Which hospital, Lily?"

Before Lily could answer, a heavy thud echoed from the back of the cathedral. The heavy oak doors, which had blown open earlier, slowly creaked wider as a tall figure in a dripping wet trench coat stepped inside.

The stranger held a phone out in front of him, the screen glowing brightly in the dim light. "Julian Vance? I'm Detective Miller, financial crimes division. Don't move an inch."
