Chapter 1 - The Shattered Vows

The heavy oak doors of St. Jude Cathedral crashed open, letting in a violent gust of wind and sheets of cold rain that pelted the ancient stone floor.

At the altar, the candlelight flickered wildly, casting long, dancing shadows across the vaulted ceilings.

Clutching a worn brown envelope to her chest, twelve-year-old Lily sprinted down the endless aisle. Her light blue hoodie was soaked through, dark water clinging to her jeans and long brown hair.

"Don't marry her!" Lily screamed, her voice cracking with desperation as she reached the bottom of the raised platform.

Julian froze, his tall frame rigid in a sharp black tuxedo and black bow tie. His face drained of color, eyes wide with sudden panic.

Beside him, Elena gripped her bouquet of white roses so tightly her knuckles turned white. Her elegant white strapless gown rustled as she stepped forward, her expression morphing from serene grace to fierce aggression.

"Get this filthy brat out of here right now!" Elena hissed, taking a sharp step toward the edge of the dais. "Security! Someone drag her out into the street!"

"No, wait!" Julian stammered, holding a hand out toward the bride before looking down at the child. His breathing turned shallow. "Lily? What are you doing here? How did you find this place?"

"You weren't coming home, Dad," Lily said, her chest heaving as she fought for air. She held out the crumpled envelope. "Mom said you forgot the most important thing. She said if I didn't bring these to you right now, everything we have is gone."

Elena slammed her bouquet down onto a velvet-covered pew, the white petals scattering like snow. "Julian, if you let that brat ruin our wedding over some pathetic child support stunt, we are done! Do you hear me? Done!"

"Shut up, Elena!" Julian shouted back, his voice echoing against the stained glass windows. He turned back to his daughter, his hands trembling as he reached for the package. "Give me that. Give it to me right now."

Lily clutched the envelope tighter, backing away toward the heavy doors. "You lied to me, Dad. You said this money was for our home, but the bank checks inside aren't yours, are they? They belong to the orphanage."

Julian lunged forward, grabbing Lily’s wrist just as lightning flashed outside, plunging the cathedral into a terrifying moment of total darkness.
