Chapter 11 - The Deflection

The deafening crack of the rifle shot echoed off the corrugated metal walls of the warehouse, shaking dust and rust down from the rafters overhead.
Lily squeezed her eyes shut, waiting for the impact, but the blow never came.
Instead, a heavy weight crashed into her side, sending her and Julian sprawling across the concrete floor. Detective Miller burst out from behind a stack of wooden crates, his service weapon smoking in his hand. He had tackled Julian and Lily just fractions of a second before the bullet struck.
The round shattered a wooden shipping crate behind them, sending splinters flying in all directions.
"Stay down!" Miller roared, rolling into a tactical kneeling position and returning fire toward Commander Hayes.
Hayes ducked behind a massive steel container, cursing as a bullet ricocheted off the metal housing inches from his face. "Vance! Control your local law enforcement asset!"
"He's not my asset anymore!" Director Vance shouted back, abandoning any pretense of calm authority as he traded shots with Hayes's hidden backup operatives.
Clara pulled Lily and Julian behind a heavy concrete pillar, clutching the manila folder to her chest like a shield. "Julian, are you hit?"
"No," Julian breathed, his hands trembling as he checked Lily over. "Lily, are you okay? Why did you jump?"
"I couldn't let him shoot you, Dad," Lily sobbed, wiping dirt and tears from her face. "Even if you made mistakes."
Across the warehouse, the firefight intensified as the heavy glass windows shattered from incoming rifle fire. More men in tactical gear swarmed through the loading bays, but to everyone's confusion, they weren't Hayes's mercenaries—they wore standard FBI tactical insignia.
"Federal agents! Drop your weapons!" a voice boomed over a megaphone from the main entrance.
Commander Hayes cursed loudly, realizing he was caught in a crossfire between local authorities, federal backup, and his own syndicate handlers. He grabbed the edge of the metal table, shoving the stack of financial ledgers into a waterproof duffel bag slung across his shoulder.
"This isn't over, Vance!" Hayes yelled over the gunfire, sprinting toward a side exit that led directly out to the dark harbor waters where a speedboat idled against the pier.
Director Vance lunged forward to give chase, but a burst of automatic gunfire from the doorway forced him back into cover. "He's getting away with the primary ledger! If he reaches open water, those accounts vanish forever!"
Julian looked down at the concrete floor near his feet. A single loose page had fallen out of the duffel bag during the scuffle. He crawled forward, snatching the wet paper just as a boot slammed down on his fingers.

Looking up, Julian found himself staring into the cold, dead eyes of one of Hayes's elite operatives, who raised the butt of his assault rifle to strike.
