Chapter 9: The Power of Community

By winter, the library program had grown beyond anyone's expectations. The women had organized a small peer-support network, helping each other prepare for GED exams, draft legal appeals, and write letters to their families. The atmosphere in Cellblock C shifted noticeably; violent incidents dropped, and a quiet sense of solidarity took root.
One morning, Warden Miller walked into the library unannounced. She stood at the back of the room, watching Maya lead a group discussion on literature and life goals.
After the session ended, Miller approached Maya’s desk. ""The program review board visited yesterday,"" Miller said, a rare warmth in her tone. ""They were thoroughly impressed by the transformation in this unit. Your effort hasn't gone unnoticed, Maya.""
