Chapter 4: Building the Sanctuary

The library was a long, drafty room filled with mismatched metal chairs and shelves of aging books. On her first day leading the workshop, only three women showed up, sitting as far apart from each other as possible. Tension hung thick in the air.
Maya placed a stack of notebooks on the center table. She didn't start with grammar rules or algebra. Instead, she took out a blank sheet of paper and set it down.
""We’re going to start by writing a letter,"" Maya announced, her voice clear and welcoming. ""It doesn't have to be perfect. It doesn't even have to be sent. Just write to someone you care about. Tell them one thing you wish they knew about you today.""
A young woman named Sarah looked down at her hands, her lower lip trembling. ""I haven't written to my son in two years. I don't even know if I remember how to spell half the words right.""

Maya sat down beside her, opening a fresh notebook. ""Then we’ll spell them together. Word by word.""
By the end of the second week, three women grew into twelve. The library, once an empty corridor of forgotten books, turned into a quiet sanctuary. Between the dictionary pages and practice essays, women who had spent years guarding themselves began to share their stories, finding solace in shared struggle.
