Chapter 13: Passing the Baton
During her final month, Maya focused on ensuring the library program would continue long after she was gone. She officially handed over the leadership of the study sessions to Brenda, who had successfully passed her reading assessment and filed her legal appeal.
On her last evening in the block, the women organized a quiet gathering in the common room. Brenda walked up to Maya, carrying a small, carefully wrapped package made from brown craft paper.
""We all put this together for you,"" Brenda said, her eyes shining with emotion as she handed it over.
Maya unfolded the paper. Inside was a handmade scrapbook filled with written messages, drawings, and notes of thanks from every woman in the program. On the front page, written in clean, elegant script, were Brenda’s words: Thank you for seeing us when we felt invisible.
