Chapter 15: The Unbroken Circle

Maya dropped her bag to the ground and fell to her knees, opening her arms wide. Lily crashed into her embrace, her small arms wrapping tightly around Maya’s neck. Maya buried her face in her daughter’s soft hair, breathing in the comforting scent of baby shampoo and strawberry soap, weeping tears of pure joy.
""I missed you so much, Mommy,"" Lily sobbed into her shoulder.
""I'm here, baby,"" Maya whispered, holding her as tightly as she could without letting go. ""I'm right here. I’m never leaving again.""
Later that evening, in the warm, bright kitchen of their small apartment, Maya sat at the dining table with Lily on her lap. On the table sat a brand-new birthday card—drawn that very morning—next to the old, faded one that had survived the prison walls.
Lily pointed to the old card. ""You kept it, Mommy?""
