Chapter 6: The Unspoken Truth

That evening, Maya sat at the small wooden desk in her cell, writing a letter of her own. Her pen moved steadily across the lined paper:

Dear Lily,

Today I helped a friend learn how to write her name in cursive. She was so proud when she finished, she kept looking at it for an hour. Every time I help someone here, I think of you. I think about how I want to be the kind of mother who shows you that no matter how hard you fall, you can always choose to stand up and build something good.

I keep your birthday card on my small shelf. Every color you picked reminds me of sunshine. Soon, my sweet girl, we won't need paper to talk to each other.

She folded the letter carefully, sliding it into an envelope stamped with the prison seal. Looking out the small barred window at the evening sky, Maya felt a sense of clarity she hadn't experienced in years. The prison walls hadn't changed, but her purpose inside them had.
