Chapter 14: Beyond the Iron Gates

The morning sun broke through the morning mist as the massive steel outer gate swung open with a heavy mechanical groan. Maya stepped out into the crisp, cool morning air, wearing her civilian clothes and carrying a small canvas bag containing her few personal belongings—and her scrapbook.

She stopped at the threshold, taking a long, deep breath of freedom. The air outside smelled different—cleaner, richer, filled with the scent of pine trees and damp soil.

Down the paved walkway, standing beside a small blue sedan, was Maya’s sister, holding the hand of a little girl in a bright yellow coat.

Lily’s eyes widened as she saw her mother. ""Mommy!"" she cried out, her small voice cutting through the morning stillness.

Lily broke away from her aunt and ran as fast as her small legs could carry her across the pavement.
