Chapter 7 - The Barrel of a Gun

The cold steel of the revolver gleamed menacingly under the faint moonlight filtering through the study doorway. Clara’s dark red silk gown seemed to ripple like fresh blood against the dark wood paneling of the hallway. Her face, usually a mask of calm sophistication, was twisted into a desperate, feral grimace. She held the heavy firearm with a terrifyingly steady grip, her finger resting lightly against the curved trigger.

"You aren't going anywhere, Julian," Clara said, her voice dangerously low, stripped of all warmth and affection. "I heard enough through the half-open door to know that Sarah's ghost is still haunting us, and I'll be damned if I let some brat and a dead woman destroy everything I sacrificed my youth to build."

Julian stood perfectly still, his hand hovering inches away from the concealed firearm tucked into the waistband of his trousers. Every instinct he had honed over decades of corporate warfare screamed at him to calculate his moves, but the raw, protective fury of a father eclipsed all logic.

"Put the gun down, Clara," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he took a slow step forward. "You've lied, you've conspired, and you helped cover up a manhunt. But if you pull that trigger tonight, there is no boardroom in the world that will save you from what I will do to you."

"Don't patronize me!" Clara shouted, her hand trembling slightly as the adrenaline peaked. "You think you're the master of this universe, Julian? You built this empire on the foundation of my social connections and my father's political clout! Without me, you're just a greedy boy from the suburbs who got lucky. I gave you legitimacy, and I won't lose it to a phantom child!"

"That child is my flesh and blood," Julian said, taking another measured step toward her. "And the people who are hunting her right now are the same monsters you conspired with five years ago. Weren't they?"

Clara’s eyes flickered for a fraction of a second—a micro-expression of absolute guilt that confirmed every dark suspicion burning in Julian’s mind.

"They were just cleaning up a loose end," Clara muttered defensively, her eyes narrowing. "Sarah was a liability. She couldn't handle the pressure of the corporate world. We offered her a clean break with a fake death, but she couldn't keep her mouth shut. She had to raise that girl to hate you, didn't she?"

"She raised her to love an image of me because she couldn't trust the reality," Julian replied, his voice laced with profound self-loathing. He took another step, closing the distance between them until the barrel of the revolver was mere inches from his chest. "And she was right. Look at me, Clara. Look at what I've become."

"Stop right there!" Clara shrieked, cocking the hammer of the revolver with a sharp, echoing click. "I mean it, Julian. One more step and I'll put a bullet through your heart right here in this hallway."

Before Clara could squeeze the trigger, a dark shadow lunged from the adjacent corridor. Chloe, the young maid, crashed into Clara’s side with full force, knocking the heavy revolver upward just as it discharged with a deafening roar that shattered the crystal chandelier above them.
