Chapter 10 - The Phantom Line

The words struck Julian harder than any physical blow could have. The barrel of his pistol wavered for a fraction of a second against the operative’s throat, the terrifying implication of the statement freezing the blood in his veins.
"What did you say?" Julian demanded, pressing the steel muzzle deeper into the man's flak jacket. "Repeat that, you son of a bitch."
"The cottage," the operative wheezed, a cruel smirk visible beneath the edge of his tactical mask. "Your daughter... she’s already gone. You think you can outrun the men who wrote the rules of this game? You're just a pawn playing on a board we own."
Before Julian could interrogate him further, a sharp, metallic click echoed from behind him. Julian whipped his head around, his tactical instincts screaming a warning, just as a second operative stepped out from the shadows of the west wing, his suppressed carbine leveled directly at Chloe’s head.
"Drop the weapon, Mr. Vance," the second operative commanded, his voice equally distorted by a modulator. "Or the girl dies right here, right now."
Chloe let out a muffled sob, squeezing her eyes shut as the cold black muzzle hovered inches from her temple. Julian’s mind raced through a frantic calculation of risk and consequence. If he shot the man beneath him, the second operative would pull the trigger before he could clear his weapon. If he surrendered, both he and Chloe would be executed, and the truth about Elena would die with them.
"Let her go," Julian said slowly, rising to his feet with deliberate care, keeping his hands visible while subtly maintaining his grip on his own firearm. "She has nothing to do with this. Take me instead."
"We'll take both of you," the second operative replied coldly. "And then we'll burn this entire estate to the ground so there's nothing left of your pathetic legacy."
Suddenly, the heavy double doors behind the operatives burst open once more, flooding the foyer with the blinding glare of high-beam headlights. A sleek, midnight-black sedan tore up the gravel driveway, slamming its brakes with a screech of rubber before smashing directly through the glass-paneled entry doors. Shards of glass rained down as the passenger door flew open, and a familiar, frantic voice cut through the roar of the engine.
"Get in! Now!"
It was Clara. Her dark red silk gown was torn and stained with soot, her hair falling wildly around her shoulders as she leaned across the front seat of the sedan, holding a heavy-caliber shotgun aimed squarely at the two operatives.
The first operative, whom Julian had just pinned, scrambled backward, raising his carbine toward the car, but Clara fired first. The thunderous blast of the shotgun echoed through the ruined foyer, sending a wall of buckshot crashing into the wall inches above the operative's head, showering them in splintered wood and plaster.
"Move!" Julian yelled, grabbing Chloe by the arm and hauling her toward the open passenger side of the car. They tumbled frantically into the backseat just as the operatives opened fire, riddling the rear windshield with a hail of bullets that shattered the glass into a million glittering fragments.

Clara slammed her foot down on the gas pedal, spinning the tires against the polished marble floor before launching the sedan out through the shattered front entrance and tearing off into the stormy night.
