Chapter 6 - The Blood-Stained Page

The phone slipped slightly in Julian’s sweaty palm, the frantic voice on the other end echoing faintly in the quiet darkness of the study. "What did you say?" Julian demanded, his voice cracking with a sudden, violent surge of panic. "Who is this?"

"My name is Martha," the older woman replied urgently, her breathing ragged as if she had been running. "I live next door to the cottage. Sarah asked me to keep an eye on Elena after she passed away. I came over tonight to check on her because of the storm rolling in, and the front door was wide open. Her room is empty, Mr. Vance. And on her wooden drawing desk, there’s a brand-new charcoal sketch of your face—except the eyes and mouth are completely covered in wet, red paint."

Julian closed his eyes tightly, pressing his free hand against the edge of the mahogany desk to steady himself. The polished marble floors of his mansion, the multi-million-dollar empire, the corporate boardrooms—everything suddenly felt meaningless compared to the chilling threat hanging over a daughter he hadn't known existed twenty minutes ago.

"Did you call the local police?" Julian asked, his mind racing through tactical scenarios with the ruthless efficiency of a corporate CEO forced into a war zone.

"No!" Martha hissed over the line. "Sarah left strict instructions before she died. If anyone ever came looking for Elena, or if anything happened to her, we were never to trust the local authorities. She said the people who forced her into hiding five years ago still have badges in their pockets. You need to come alone, Julian. If you bring the police, you’ll find her body."

The call abruptly disconnected with a sharp click, leaving Julian staring blindly at the glowing screen. The threat was real, precise, and terrifyingly immediate. Clara wasn't just a bitter wife; she was part of a larger, darker conspiracy that had hunted Sarah across state lines and had now targeted their child.

Julian dropped his phone onto the desk, his eyes snapping back to the leather-bound journal lying beside it. With trembling hands, he unhooked the leather strap and pulled the cover open, desperate to find answers in Sarah’s own handwriting before he walked out into the night.

The first page was dated exactly five years ago, written on the very night Julian had buried the empty casket.

“If you are reading this, Julian, it means Clara finally slipped up, or my little girl has grown brave enough to seek you out. I am not dead. I had to let you think I was. The men who tried to take over your company through our family merger didn't just want the shipping routes—they wanted complete control of our bloodline. When I refused to sign over my shares, they promised to kill our unborn child while I watched. I faked the crash with the help of a loyal driver. I took our baby and ran into the dark.”

Julian’s breath caught in his throat, hot tears finally burning the corners of his eyes. He flipped the page frantically, reading the hurried ink scrawls.

“Elena has your eyes, Julian. Every time I looked at her, I saw the man I fell in love with before ambition poisoned your soul. But she also has your stubborn heart. She knows you are alive out there in the world, building monuments of glass and steel while we hide in the shadows. She draws you every day to feel close to a father she’s never touched. But tonight... tonight I saw a black sedan parked at the edge of the woods. They know where we are.”

Julian slammed the journal shut, his chest heaving with cold fury. He reached into the safe, pulled out the heavy stack of emergency bearer bonds and a small, suppressed 9mm pistol he kept hidden for security, sliding it into the waistband of his tuxedo trousers.

He spun around to leave the study, only to freeze in the doorway.

Clara was standing in the shadows of the hallway, holding a silver revolver aimed directly at his chest.
