Chapter 5 - The Safe

The heavy oak door of the private study creaked open with a soft, ominous groan. Inside, the room was shrouded in deep shadows, illuminated only by the pale moonlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling bay windows overlooking the manicured lawns. Julian stepped inside, locking the door firmly behind him. The air smelled of old leather, expensive scotch, and dust—a scent that suddenly felt suffocating. He crossed the Persian rug toward the massive oil painting of his grandfather, the patriarch who had built the Vance shipping empire on ruthless ambition and unyielding discipline.

Julian reached up and swung the heavy canvas frame outward on its hidden hinges, revealing the heavy steel door of the wall safe set deep into the reinforced concrete. The digital keypad cast a faint blue glow across his tense face. He reached out with trembling fingers, his mind racing as he tried to remember the exact combination he had set a decade ago, a sequence of numbers tied to the anniversary of the day he first met Sarah in college.

The buttons clicked softly beneath his fingertips: 0-9-1-4.

With a mechanical hum, the heavy steel bolts retracted, and the safe door swung open. Inside sat stacks of emergency bearer bonds, a velvet-lined box of family heirlooms, and, resting right on top, a thick, leather-bound journal with faded gold lettering along the spine.

Julian’s hands shook as he lifted the journal out of the safe. The leather was worn and soft from years of handling, carrying a faint, lingering scent of lavender and old paper—the exact scent of Sarah’s skin. He carried it over to the mahogany desk, pulled out the heavy brass key from his tuxedo pocket, and stared at the brass padlock that secured the journal's leather strap.

He slid the key into the lock. It turned with a smooth, silent click.

Before he could lift the cover, his cell phone vibrated violently against the desk, shattering the heavy silence of the room. Julian jumped, his heart hammering against his ribs. He looked down at the illuminated screen. It was an unknown number, but the area code was from the coastal town three hours north.

He hesitated for a fraction of a second before swiping the screen to accept the call.

"Hello?" Julian answered, his voice tight.

"Mr. Vance?" a breathless, panicked voice spoke on the other end of the line. It wasn't Chloe. It was an older, unfamiliar voice, rough with panic. "You need to get up here right now. Your daughter... she just vanished from her bedroom, and we found a fresh sketch of you on her desk, drenched in blood."

May you like

Julian froze, the blood draining entirely from his face as the terrifying reality of the situation crashed down upon him.
