Chapter 3 - The Binding Oath

The accusation pierced Julian's heart more deeply than any physical weapon ever could. He stared at the charcoal sketch in his trembling hands, tracing the sharp lines of his own jawline, rendered by a young artist who knew his face better than anyone alive, yet had never spoken a single word to him. The luxury of the grand hallway, the gleaming marble floors, and the distant murmur of the high-society gala happening downstairs suddenly felt like a gilded cage built upon a foundation of lies and deceit.

"Take me to her," Julian commanded, his voice dropping into a dangerously quiet register that brooked no argument. He looked past Clara, whose face had turned the color of ash, and locked his gaze onto the young maid. "Right now, Chloe. You are going to take me to my daughter."

Chloe swallowed hard, her throat visibly tightening. "I can't just take you there, Mr. Vance. Sarah made me swear a blood oath on her deathbed—her actual deathbed, three weeks ago when the cancer finally finished what the accident failed to do. She said you would destroy Elena's gentle soul just like you destroyed hers."

"Don't lecture me about destruction!" Julian stepped forward, towering over the young girl. "I have a legal and moral right to my own child. Where are they living? How has a dead woman been hiding in plain sight?"

"They aren't hiding in the city," Chloe said defiantly, lifting her chin despite her fear. "They’ve been living in a tiny, forgotten coastal cottage three hours north, surviving on the money Sarah saved before you stripped her family accounts. Elena thinks her father is a tragic hero who died before she was born. If you walk in there and shatter that illusion with your wealth and your cold corporate cruelty, it will kill her."

Clara finally regained some of her composure, stepping into the space between Julian and the maid. Her voice was icy and calculated, a desperate attempt to salvage her marriage and her social standing. "Julian, think about what you are doing. This is obviously an elaborate extortion plot. This girl is an opportunistic servant working with some con artist who found out about your past. If you leave this gala tonight, the press will tear our stock prices to shreds. The board of directors will crucify you."

Julian didn't even look at Clara. He slowly folded the charcoal sketch and slid it into the inner pocket of his tuxedo jacket, right over his racing heart. "Let the board crucify me. Let the stock market crash. For five years, I have lived a lie because I trusted you, Clara. That ends tonight."

"You can't just leave me here!" Clara hissed, her fingernails digging into her own palms. "If you walk out those front doors, our marriage is over."

"Our marriage ended the moment you looked me in the eye and lied about a dead woman," Julian replied coldly. He turned his attention back to Chloe. "Get your coat, Chloe. We are driving north."

Chloe didn't move. She reached into her apron pocket one last time and pulled out a heavy brass key, laying it gently on the polished golden floor between them. "She left you something else before she passed away. A locked journal. And the key is hidden inside the very first drawing she ever made of you."
