Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

The revelation hung heavily in the suffocating air of the grand hallway, freezing everyone in place. Julian’s hands slowly slipped from Chloe’s shoulders as the staggering weight of the lie hit him with the force of a physical blow. Five years ago, he had stood by an open grave, mourning the tragic car accident that had claimed the life of his beloved college sweetheart, Sarah. The grief had nearly broken him, pushing him into the cold, strategic marriage with Clara that secured his corporate empire. Now, that entire foundation of sorrow and survival was being ripped apart by a terrified girl in a maid’s uniform.
"That's impossible," Clara breathed, her voice laced with sudden panic as she realized the dangerous implications of the ghost returning. "Sarah died. We saw the wreckage. We identified the personal effects at the morgue."
"Did you?" Chloe asked bitterly, wiping a tear from her cheek with the back of her trembling hand. "Or did you just pay off the right people to make sure you could take over her family's shipping fortune without any messy complications?"
Julian turned his furious, bloodshot eyes toward Clara. The pristine image of his sophisticated second wife suddenly fractured, revealing a calculating stranger he had lived with for years without ever truly knowing. "Clara. Look at me. Did you know about this? Did you know Sarah survived?"
Clara backed away until her spine hit the ornate golden wall, her chest heaving as she fought to maintain her composure. "Julian, listen to me. People do desperate things when they are young and ambitious. I loved you. I wanted to build an empire with you. Sarah was weak; she would have dragged you down with her artistic ideals and family debt."
"She was my wife!" Julian roared, the sound bouncing off the crystal chandeliers with terrifying intensity. "And if what this girl is saying is true, she had my child. My flesh and blood, hidden away while I walked these empty halls like a ghost."
Chloe pulled a crumpled piece of heavy sketch paper from the deep pocket of her white apron and held it out with shaking fingers. "She didn't just hide, Mr. Vance. She watched you from afar. She made hundreds of portraits of you from magazine covers, gala appearances, and stolen newspaper clippings."
Julian reached out slowly, his fingertips brushing the rough edge of the paper. He turned it over, and his breath hitched in his throat. It was a charcoal drawing of his own face, rendered with breathtaking detail and aching tenderness, but across his eyes, the artist had drawn a heavy black blindfold.
"Why the blindfold?" Julian choked out, his vision blurring.
May you like
"Because," Chloe whispered, her eyes wide with terror, "she told me that if you ever looked at her with your real eyes, you would recognize the monster who abandoned her mother."
