Chapter 7

The heavy front door of the house rattled under a firm, authoritative knock, followed immediately by a booming, practiced voice echoing through the foyer. "Police department! Open the door!"
The sound acted as an immediate circuit breaker for the chaotic energy filling the hallway. Dan froze mid-step, his hands hovering near his sides as the flashing lights from the cruisers outside bathed the corridor in pulsing waves of crimson and azure. Sarah let out a long, shuddering breath, her shoulders sagging instantly as the overwhelming tension drained from her frame. She turned away from her brother, walking slowly toward the front of the house to open the door for the officers, her hands raised slightly in a universal gesture of cooperation.
Dan stood alone in the center of the dark hallway, his green long-sleeve shirt stark against the dark paneling. The fierce, unblinking rage that had fueled his actions for the past hour seemed to evaporate, leaving behind a hollow, defeated shell of a man. He stared down at his own hands, the knuckles bruised and slightly bloodied from punching through the wooden door, as if only now realizing the physical toll of his destructive rampage.
Inside the guest room, Rachel heard the heavy front door open and the muffled, calm voices of the responding officers interacting with Sarah. She pressed the disconnect button on her phone, ending the emergency call with a quiet sigh of relief, though she did not yet release her protective grip on Toby.
"Can we come out now, Mom?" Toby asked softly, his voice trembling slightly as he looked up at the door.
"In just a minute, sweetheart," Rachel replied, her eyes never leaving the jagged hole in the door. Through the opening, she watched as Dan slowly sank to his knees on the hallway floor, his back resting against the opposite wall. The aggressive predator of moments ago was gone, replaced by a broken individual finally collapsing under the staggering weight of his own terrible choices.
Footsteps approached the guest room door down the hallway, firm and measured. A calm, professional voice called out from the corridor. "Ma'am? This is Officer Vance. Is everyone inside safe?"
May you like
Rachel cleared her throat, gathering the remnants of her strength before she answered. "Yes. We're safe. My son and I are both in here."
"We have the situation secured outside," the officer continued, his tone reassuring. "Take your time, but when you're ready, unlock the door and step out slowly."
