Chapter 3

Down the hall, Sarah stood directly in Dan’s path, her hands raised in a defensive, placating gesture as she stared up at her older brother with profound disappointment and fear. The overhead hallway light cast long, harsh shadows across Dan’s face, accentuating the wild, unblinking stare in his eyes. He wore his favorite green long-sleeve shirt, the fabric now stained with sweat at the collar, his dark pants slightly rumpled from his frantic pacing.
"Dan, Dan, maybe we should go," Sarah pleaded, her voice trembling as she took a cautious half-step backward. "Look at what you’ve done. This has gone way too far. You need to stop right now."
Dan stopped pacing, his boots pivoting sharply on the floorboards. He looked down at his sister as if he were only just remembering she was there. His jaw clenched so hard muscles twitched in his cheeks. "You don't understand, Sarah," Dan said, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly rasp that carried easily through the open doors. "They’re trying to erase everything I’ve built. They’re locking me out of my own life."
"That’s not true, and you know it," Sarah countered, her voice surprisingly steady despite the overwhelming terror threatening to buckle her knees. She kept her eyes locked on his, recognizing the dangerous detachment in his expression. "Rachel is just trying to protect Toby. You are terrifying your own son."

Dan flinched slightly at the mention of his son, a micro-expression of sudden guilt flickering across his features before he instantly hardened his expression again. He shook his head violently, refusing to accept the reality of his actions. He raised a hand and rubbed the back of his neck, where the skin was flushed bright red with adrenaline. "She started this," Dan muttered, stepping past Sarah with a sudden, purposeful stride that left his sister spinning around to follow him.
He moved back toward the guest bedroom, his focus narrowing entirely on the wooden door with its newly jagged wound. Sarah hurried after him, her hands hovering helplessly near his shoulders, afraid to touch him yet desperate to halt his advance. The domestic sanctuary they had all shared for years had evaporated in less than an hour, replaced by a volatile standoff born of unchecked anger and fragile egos. Dan reached out, his fingers brushing against the splintered edges of the hole he had just created, a cold determination settling into his posture as he prepared for the next phase of his confrontation.
