Chapter 5

With a sharp intake of breath, Dan pulled his face away from the hole, the harsh flashlight beam disappearing as he stepped back into the hallway. The sudden return to relative darkness felt heavy, almost oppressive, but it offered Rachel a brief moment to catch her breath. She lowered her hand from Toby’s eyes, whispering softly into his ear that they were going to be safe, though her own heart was hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
Down the hall, the low murmur of Dan’s voice argued with Sarah in frantic, hushed tones. The sharp, frantic edge had returned to his speech, but it was now laced with a frantic urgency as the reality of the police response set in. Sarah’s voice was firm, refusing to back down, acting as a human barrier between her brother and the room where Rachel and Toby waited.
Rachel used the brief respite to assess their position. The guest room had no alternative exit save for a narrow window overlooking the front lawn, but the drop was steep, and opening it would make too much noise. They were safer holding their ground, trusting the heavy oak frame—despite its new flaw—to hold until help arrived. She adjusted her grip on the smartphone, whispering a quick update to the dispatcher, confirming that Dan had temporarily moved away from the door but remained just outside in the hallway.

Toby leaned his head against Rachel’s shoulder, his breathing finally beginning to slow down from hyperventilation to a more natural, steady rhythm. The courage of the young boy in the face of such overwhelming fear humbled Rachel, fueling her own quiet resolve. She would not let Dan break them. No matter what happened next, she would shield her son from the toxic fallout of a life unraveling.
The silence in the hallway stretched out, pregnant with tension. Every creak of the old floorboards sounded like a gunshot. Rachel kept her eyes fixed on the jagged hole in the door, watching the shifting shadows on the wall opposite the opening. She knew the calm was deceptive; Dan was calculating his next move, torn between flight and a final, desperate attempt to reclaim control of a situation that was slipping irrevocably through his fingers.
