Chapter 2

The quiet hum of the dispatcher’s voice on the line was a tiny anchor in a storm of escalating chaos. Rachel held the phone millimeters from her ear, straining to listen through the rapid, rhythmic pounding of her own heartbeat. On the other side of the bedroom door, the pacing had temporarily stopped, replaced by the heavy, labored breathing of a man pushed completely past the boundaries of reason. Sarah’s voice floated through the wood again, muffled but insistent, pleading with Dan to drop his keys and walk out to the driveway.

Dan let out a harsh, bitter laugh that lacked any trace of humor, a chilling sound that made Toby whimper softly against Rachel’s chest. Rachel shifted her weight, wincing as a sharp splinter from the doorframe snagged her sleeve. She could not afford to make a single sound. The house felt suffocatingly small, trapped in a timeless vacuum where every second stretched into an eternity. She glanced down at her phone screen, noting the battery percentage: forty-two percent. It had to last. The dispatcher’s calm, steady instructions to stay put and keep the line open were their only lifeline against the looming nightmare just inches away.

Outside the room, Dan’s voice rose sharply once more, demanding entry with a terrifying sense of entitlement. He believed he was the victim here, a delusion that made him infinitely more dangerous. Rachel knew the underlying triggers—months of mounting financial pressure, professional failures, and an unwillingness to seek help—had finally coalesced into this destructive furnace. But understanding the root cause offered no protection against a fist breaking through wood.

Toby looked up, his big, tear-filled eyes searching Rachel’s face for a reassurance she struggled to manufacture. She placed a single finger gently across her own lips, signaling absolute silence, and Toby nodded bravely, biting his lower lip until it turned pale. Rachel’s gaze drifted back to the jagged hole in the door. The beam of light from the corridor flickered as someone walked past the opening outside. The tension in the hallway grew thick, heavy with the terrifying anticipation of what Dan would do next. The police were coming, but the distance between the safety of the open road and the dark interior of this hallway felt insurmountable, a yawning chasm of time where anything could happen before help finally arrived at their door.
