Chapter 4

Through the freshly punched, jagged hole in the wooden door, Dan’s face suddenly appeared like a grotesque apparition framed in jagged timber. He pressed his smartphone flashlight directly against the opening, blinding Rachel with a brilliant, harsh beam of white light that cut through the dimness of the guest room. The glare forced Rachel to squint and pull Toby tighter against her, shielding the boy’s sensitive eyes with her free hand.

Dan’s eyes were wide, bloodshot, and intensely wild, scanning the room with manic precision until they locked directly onto Rachel. The proximity was terrifying; she could smell the metallic tang of sweat and the stale coffee on his breath through the splintered gap.

"You're making this harder than it has to be, Rachel," Dan said softly, his voice dangerously calm now, which made it far more unnerving than his shouting had been. "Just open the lock. We need to talk this out like adults."

Rachel swallowed hard, her throat painfully dry. Her voice was steady when she finally answered, driven by a fierce, protective instinct that overrode her terror. "There is nothing left to talk about, Dan. Not like this. Step away from the door."

Dan pressed his face closer to the hole, one eye visible in the stark light. A chilling smile touched the corners of his mouth, devoid of any genuine warmth. "You think you can just shut me out of my own home? Open this door, Rachel, or I swear I’ll take the whole frame down."

Behind him, Sarah rushed into view, grabbing at Dan’s arm with both hands and trying to pull him backward away from the threshold. "Dan, stop it! The police are on their way! I heard her on the phone!"

Dan jerked his arm away, shaking Sarah off with an angry twist of his torso, though he didn't strike her. The warning about the police seemed to register, finally penetrating the dense fog of his rage. For a split second, hesitation flickered in his wild eyes. His breathing hitched, and the flashlight beam wavered, dancing across the bedroom ceiling before returning to center on Rachel’s face. That fleeting moment of doubt was the only opening Rachel needed to realize the situation had reached a critical boiling point. The countdown to the arrival of the authorities had begun, and Dan knew his window of control was rapidly closing.
