Chapter 7 - The Anonymous Warning

The private elevator hummed softly as it plummeted toward the subterranean parking garage, but the air inside felt charged with sudden, volatile electricity. Daniel stared down at his phone screen, his thumb hovering over the mysterious message that had just bypassed his primary security filters.
The text read simply: “Turn around now, Daniel. Julian knows you're tracking the node. He's waiting for you with more than just lawyers.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened. He held the phone up so Sarah could read the warning over his shoulder. The color drained from her face, her eyes widening in sheer terror as she absorbed the implied threat.
Sarah whispered, her voice trembling slightly.
“Who could have sent that? Is it a trap?”
Daniel pocketed the phone with a sharp, decisive snap.
“It doesn't matter if it's a trap. If we back down now, they take everything I've spent my entire life building. My company, my savings, my future security—all gone.”
Lily reached out, taking hold of Daniel’s index finger with her small hand, grounding him amidst the rising panic.
“I'm not scared, Daddy. We'll beat them.”
Daniel offered her a tight, reassuring smile, though his stomach churned with anxiety. The elevator dinged softly, the heavy doors parting to reveal the dimly lit concrete expanse of the hotel garage. Rows of expensive luxury vehicles sat parked under flickering fluorescent lights, casting long, eerie shadows across the damp pavement.
They hurried toward Daniel’s black sedan parked near the exit ramp. The cavernous parking garage was eerily quiet, save for the distant echo of a car engine idling somewhere in the lower levels. Daniel unlocked the doors remotely, ushering Lily into the backseat and making sure her seatbelt was securely fastened before sliding into the driver's seat.
Sarah climbed into the passenger side, locking her door immediately and peering out into the dim shadows between the concrete pillars.
“Daniel... do you hear that?”
Daniel killed the engine before it even had a chance to roar to life, straining his ears against the silence. From somewhere near the corner of the garage, a rhythmic scraping sound echoed off the concrete walls—like the scraping of a heavy boot sole against stone.
Suddenly, the overhead fluorescent lights flickered and died, plunging the entire parking level into pitch-black darkness.
Lily let out a tiny gasp from the backseat, leaning forward to press her face against the center console between the front seats.
“Daddy, what's happening?”
Daniel reached into his glove compartment, his fingers brushing against the cold steel barrel of a legal firearm he kept licensed for personal protection. He pulled it out quietly, checking the chamber with practiced precision while keeping his eyes locked on the rearview mirror.
Two bright sets of high-beam headlights suddenly flashed on at the far end of the garage, blinding them instantly. A massive black SUV roared out from the shadows, accelerating directly toward their sedan at terrifying speed.
Daniel slammed the car into reverse, shouting a warning to the passengers inside.
