Chapter 12 - The Final Sprint

The acrid smell of burning coolant filled the cabin of the damaged sedan as steam hissed from the crumpled front fender. Daniel checked the rearview mirror with frantic urgency, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

Daniel called back over his shoulder, his voice thick with panic.

“Lily! Are you alright back there?”

Lily coughed slightly, adjusting her small seatbelt as she looked around with wide, brave eyes.

“I'm okay, Daddy! My seatbelt held me tight.”

Daniel let out a massive sigh of relief, though he knew they were out of time for driving. He glanced at the digital dashboard clock: eleven-fifty-two in the morning. Corporate headquarters was still six blocks away across a sprawling downtown plaza that was entirely blocked off by weekend farmers market crowds.

Sarah pushed her door open, grimacing as pain shot through her bruised shoulder.

“The car is dead, Daniel. We can't drive another inch.”

Daniel kicked his door open, stepping out onto the asphalt and looking up toward the towering glass skyscraper that housed his life's work. Without hesitation, he reached into the back seat, unbuckled Lily, and scooped her up into his arms, holding her tightly against his chest.

Daniel turned to Sarah with fierce determination in his eyes.

“We run. Come on!”

They sprinted down the concrete sidewalk, weaving frantically through the dense crowds of weekend shoppers and market stalls. Daniel carried Lily like she weighed nothing, his lungs burning with every breath as they dodged pedestrians and leaped over display tables in a desperate dash against the ticking clock.

Sarah kept pace right beside them, her sage green bridesmaid dress catching on the corner of a fruit stand as she tore past, ripping the delicate fabric without slowing down.

Sarah shouted over the noise of the crowd.

“Three minutes left, Daniel! The purge sequence is entering the final core sector!”

Daniel pushed his legs harder, his muscles screaming from exhaustion as they reached the grand glass revolving doors of the Vance Technologies building. He slammed his body through the entrance, startling the lone weekend security guard stationed at the front lobby desk.

The security guard stood up in alarm, recognizing his boss instantly.

“Mr. Vance! What happened to you?”

Daniel didn't stop running, heading straight for the private elevator bank at the back of the lobby.

“No time to explain, Miller! Hit the lockdown override for the core server room on the forty-second floor right now!”

Miller’s eyes widened in panic as he fumbled with his desktop terminal, slamming his palm down on the master alarm button. The building's internal speakers immediately chimed a warning tone throughout the entire forty-story structure.

Daniel rushed into the private elevator just as the doors began to close, holding Lily securely in one arm while pressing his thumb against the biometric scanner panel to activate the express lift.

The elevator shot upward with breathtaking speed, pressing their bodies down into the floor as they hurtled toward the top of the skyscraper.

Sarah checked her phone one last time, her voice cracking with despair as the final seconds ticked away.

“One minute left, Daniel... the server is formatting the primary registry right now!”

The elevator dinged softly, the heavy steel doors parting to reveal the sleek, sterile hallway of the forty-second floor server room just as the building's countdown timer reached zero.
