Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

The bright lights of the bridal suite hummed with a tense, oppressive energy that seemed to squeeze the oxygen right out of the room. Clara stood in her heavy white wedding gown, the intricate lace suddenly feeling like a cage of thorns against her skin. Her dark hair was pinned up in an elaborate chignon, though a few stray strands had already come loose from her furious movements. Across the room, six-year-old Lily stood frozen by the vanity table, clutching her white wicker flower basket so tightly her knuckles had turned ghostly white. Tears streamed down the little girl's flushed cheeks, silent and heartbreaking, yet Clara felt no warmth or pity in her chest, only a jagged spike of pure rage.

Clara stepped forward, her voice sharp and brittle as she glared down at the child.

“Stop crying.”

Lily choked out a sob, her small shoulders shaking under the delicate fabric of her white flower girl dress.

“I hate you!”

Before Clara could snap back, the heavy oak door banged open against the wall. Daniel burst into the room, his black tuxedo slightly disheveled from rushing up the grand hotel staircase. Without a second glance at the bride, he dropped to his knees and pulled the sobbing child into a fierce, protective embrace.

Lily buried her face in his shoulder, her voice muffled and desperate.

“Daddy! Please don't marry her!”

Clara’s face twisted into an ugly sneer as she shoved her expensive white wedding bouquet off the vanity. The arrangement of roses and lilies hit the floor with a dull thud, scattering petals across the pristine carpet while Daniel shielded Lily with his broad shoulders.

Clara threw her hands up, her voice rising in frantic self-defense.

“She ruined my wedding!”

Lily pulled back slightly, her tear-filled blue eyes locking onto her father's face as she reached into the folds of her basket. With trembling fingers, she retrieved a sleek smartphone and thrust it toward him, the bright screen illuminating their grim expressions with a harsh, cold glow.

Lily held the device out like a shield.

“Daddy, I found this.”

Daniel frowned, taking the phone slowly as the heavy atmosphere in the room grew completely dead still. Two of the bridesmaids, dressed in matching sage green gowns, stepped closer from the doorway, their eyes wide with sudden dread. One of them stared at the illuminated screen, her breath hitching in her throat as a wave of realization washed over her pale face.

The bridesmaid spoke in a trembling whisper.

“Daniel, I know that number.”
