Chapter 3 - The Secret Compartment

The revelation hung in the air like a foul odor, impossible to ignore or sweep away. Clara’s breath hitched, her carefully constructed facade finally beginning to crack around the edges. She took a half-step backward, her white heels clicking sharply against the hardwood floor.
Clara stammered, losing her fierce composure for the first time.
“That... that doesn't prove anything. Anyone could have dropped it in there.”
Lily peeked out from behind Daniel’s legs, her small voice cutting through Clara’s flimsy excuse with devastating clarity.
“I saw you put it there, Clara. When you thought I was sleeping on the couch. You said into the phone that the plan was almost complete and the fool was walking right into the trap.”
The brutal honesty of a child struck Daniel harder than any physical blow. He looked down at his daughter, seeing the dark circles under her innocent eyes—reminders of the sleepless nights she had spent watching her new stepmother manipulate the household.
Daniel knelt down once more, his voice softening just a fraction as he spoke to Lily.
“You knew about this all along, sweetie? Why didn't you tell me sooner?”
Lily wiped her remaining tears with the back of her small hand, looking up at her father with a mixture of fear and devotion.
“I tried, Daddy. But every time I said something bad about Clara, you told me I just needed time to adjust. You said she loved us.”
A wave of profound guilt washed over Daniel, twisting his stomach into painful knots. He had been so blinded by the desire to give his motherless daughter a stable home that he had ignored every red flag waving right in front of his face. He stood back up, his eyes locking onto Clara with a freezing intensity that made the bridesmaids take another cautious step backward toward the exit.
Daniel’s voice was devoid of all emotion as he delivered his verdict.
‘Get out.”
Clara gasped, her hands flying to her chest in genuine shock.
“Get out? Daniel, are you insane? We are getting married in twenty minutes! The guests are all downstairs waiting in the grand chapel!”
Daniel took a step toward her, closing the distance until she could feel the fierce heat of his suppressed fury.
“There is no wedding, Clara. There is only you, packing your bags, and leaving this hotel before I decide to involve the police for corporate espionage and fraud.”
Panic finally broke through Clara’s denial, turning her expression into a mask of desperate malice. She realized her grand scheme of taking over Daniel's multi-million-dollar tech firm was crumbling right before her eyes.
Clara hissed, dropping the sweet persona entirely.
“You think you can just discard me like trash? You’ll ruin me socially, Daniel! Everyone knows us!”
Daniel didn't blink. He reached into his tuxedo jacket, pulled out his own phone, and dialed a familiar number with absolute calm precision.
Daniel spoke into the device without breaking eye contact with the woman he had trusted with his life.
“Security, this is Daniel Vance. Please send two officers to the bridal suite on the fourth floor immediately. We have a trespasser stealing private documents.”

Clara’s face lost every trace of color as she heard the words echo through the quiet room.
