Chapter 11 - The Delayed Trigger

The heavy doors of the warehouse swung shut behind the departing police cruisers, leaving Daniel and Sarah standing alone amidst the cold, empty crates and blinking computer terminals. Julian’s final parting words echoed mockingly inside Daniel’s head, sending a fresh spike of adrenaline through his veins.

Daniel spun around toward the main folding table where Julian’s laptop still glowed with a series of active background processes.

Daniel muttered under his breath, rushing across the concrete floor.

“What did he mean by the real trap?”

Sarah hurried over, peering over his shoulder as Daniel began rapidly tapping commands into the terminal.

“Look at the active task scheduler, Daniel. There's a background script running on a delayed timer.”

Daniel’s eyes scanned the scrolling lines of code until they landed on a timestamp set for precisely twelve o'clock noon—exactly fifteen minutes from right now. The script wasn't another asset transfer; it was a total data purge designed to wipe every intellectual property patent, client database, and proprietary source code owned by Vance Technologies from the cloud servers permanently.

Daniel cursed loudly, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard in a desperate attempt to abort the sequence.

“He’s trying to burn the company to the ground out of sheer spite.”

Sarah gripped the edge of the table, her face pale with dread.

“Can you override it from this local terminal?”

Daniel shook his head rapidly, sweat beading across his forehead.

“No. Julian locked down the root administrative access when he initiated the script. The only way to stop the purge is to input the master biometric override code directly into the primary server hub located at our main corporate headquarters across town.”

Daniel checked his wristwatch. The digital display read eleven-forty-five in the morning. Headquarters was a twenty-minute drive through downtown traffic under normal conditions, and they had less than fifteen minutes left before the purge wiped ten years of his life’s work into nothingness.

Daniel grabbed his phone from his pocket, dialing the sedan's intercom system to check on Lily waiting outside.

“Lily, sweetie, are you alright out there?”

Lily’s voice came through the speaker, calm and brave.

“I'm fine, Daddy. I saw the police take the bad people away. Are we going home now?”

Daniel swallowed hard, his heart aching as he realized he had to put his daughter back into the line of fire one more time.

“Listen to me, Lily. We have to drive to my office right now. We're in a race against time.”

Five minutes later, their black sedan tore out of the warehouse district, racing toward the downtown corporate skyscraper with tires screaming against the asphalt. Sarah managed to establish a remote connection to the corporate server on her phone, monitoring the countdown timer as it ticked down relentlessly.

Sarah’s voice trembled as she read the digital display.

“Ten minutes left, Daniel. If we hit the morning bridge traffic jam, we won't make it in time.”

Daniel gripped the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned translucent. He veered hard into the carpool lane, bypassing a long line of gridlocked vehicles just as a massive construction truck suddenly pulled out directly in front of them without signaling.

Daniel slammed on the brakes, the sedan fishtailing dangerously across the wet asphalt as he fought desperately to avoid a catastrophic collision.

Lily screamed from the backseat as the car spun three hundred and sixty degrees before slamming to a dead halt against a concrete highway barrier, the front passenger fender completely crushed.

Sarah groaned, holding her bruised forehead as smoke began to curl out from under the hood of their damaged sedan.
