Chapter 4 - The Ghost of the East Wing

Water dripped heavily from the trench coat of the man stepping into the harsh backyard lighting. David Thorne did not look like a man currently residing in Zurich. His hair was slicked back, his jaw was shadowed with a three-day stubble, and his eyes darted nervously between the three women frozen in place around the swimming pool.
Julianne froze, the color draining completely from her face, leaving her skin a ghastly chalk-white. The baby in her arms stirred again, letting out a weak wail that seemed to puncture the tense silence of the night.
“David?” Eleanor breathed out, her mind struggling to reconcile the man standing before her with the official narrative Julianne had repeated for weeks. “Where have you been? We were told you were abroad.”
David didn’t answer Eleanor immediately. Instead, his frantic gaze locked onto Clara, who was still kneeling on the cold concrete. Relief washed over the maid’s face, followed quickly by a renewed wave of terror.
“You shouldn’t have jumped in, Clara,” David said, his voice raspy and strained. “It wasn’t safe.”
“She tried to drown him, David!” Julianne shrieked, her voice pitching up into hysteria as she rushed forward to thrust the white-wrapped bundle toward her husband. “Tell them! Tell Eleanor what this wretched girl just tried to do to our son!”
David stared at the bundle in Julianne’s arms, but he didn’t reach out to take it. He took a slow step backward, holding his hands up defensively. “Julianne, stop it. The game is over. I saw everything from the guesthouse window.”
Eleanor stepped between them, her green dress rustling sharply as she turned to David. “What game? What is happening here tonight? I want the truth right now, or I am calling the police and having every single one of you escorted off this property.”
“There is no baby in that blanket, Eleanor,” David whispered, his voice trembling as he pointed a shaking finger at his wife.

Julianne shrieked, clutching the white blanket tighter to her chest, her eyes wide with a terrifying, unhinged fury. “Don’t you dare!”
