Chapter 2 - The Hidden Notebook

Eleanor’s eyes didn’t waver from the sodden piece of leather sticking out of Clara’s pocket. The pool water dripped rhythmically onto the flagstone, a steady metronomic countdown that amplified the tension suffocating the backyard. Julianne readjusted her grip on the baby wrapped in the white blanket, though the infant remained deathly silent, an unnatural stillness that sent a cold shiver down Eleanor’s spine.

“What is that in your pocket, Clara?” Eleanor asked, her voice dropping to a dangerous, low register that commanded attention.

Clara instinctively pressed a wet hand against her thigh, trying to shield the notebook from view. “Nothing. It’s just... housekeeping notes. Schedules for the week.” Her voice shook violently, betraying the lie instantly.

Julianne scoffed, a harsh, dismissive sound that echoed off the glass sliding doors of the modern mansion. “See? She’s hiding things already. She’s a thief and a danger to this household. Fire her tonight, Eleanor, or I’m packing my bags and taking my child far away from this madhouse.”

Eleanor ignored Julianne’s ultimatum. She stepped forward, her black heels clicking with deliberate authority, and knelt right beside the shivering maid. Before Clara could pull away, Eleanor reached out with steady fingers and slid the damp leather notebook completely out of the pocket.

“Don’t!” Clara gasped, lunging forward with a desperate grab, but Eleanor easily pulled the journal out of reach.

The cover was ruined by the chlorine water, the ink on the first few pages bleeding into illegible smudges. But as Eleanor flipped it open to a middle page, her breath hitched. The handwriting wasn’t Clara’s neat cursive; it belonged to Julianne’s estranged husband, David, who had supposedly left the country on a business trip three weeks ago.

Eleanor traced the words with a trembling thumb, reading the frantic scrawl detailing threats of blackmail and a missing trust fund. She slowly raised her eyes to meet Julianne’s, whose face had gone completely pale under the recessed patio lighting.

“Care to explain why David’s journal is in your maid’s uniform, Julianne?” Eleanor whispered.
