Chapter 14 - Federal Intervention

“Federal Reserve Police! Nobody moves an inch!” the man commanded, his voice booming across the courtyard with an authority that instantly silenced everyone present.

Sarah’s cool, unshakeable composure finally cracked for a fraction of a second. Her head snapped toward the gate as three more federal agents swarmed the patio, instantly taking tactical positions around the pool, the glass doors, and the exits. The flashing red and blue lights of the local cruisers were suddenly joined by the harsh white spotlights of federal transport vans pulling up outside the estate walls.

Julianne stopped thrashing on the wet concrete, staring up at the newcomers with wide, bewildered eyes. David slowly dropped his hands from his face, his mouth hanging open in shock.

The lead federal agent walked straight up to Sarah, ignoring the local police officer entirely, and flipped open a pristine leather folder. “Sarah Jenkins, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, identity theft, unauthorized surveillance, and the illegal transfer of restricted trust funds under the federal banking acts.”

Sarah stood frozen, the real baby whimpering softly in her arms as she stared down the federal agent. Her silver-rimmed glasses slid slightly down the bridge of her nose, but she made no move to adjust them. “There must be some mistake,” Sarah said, her voice regaining a fraction of its chilling polish. “All actions taken tonight were authorized under Section 8 emergency protocols for estate stabilization.”

“Section 8 doesn’t cover kidnapping infants, forging biometric signatures, and staging fake drownings to manipulate stock prices, Ms. Jenkins,” the federal agent snapped, signaling to two agents who immediately stepped forward to place heavy steel cuffs around Sarah’s wrists, carefully transferring the crying baby into the arms of a trained female medic who had accompanied the federal team.

Clara took a slow, deliberate step backward toward the dark shadows of the oak trees near the pool edge, hoping to blend into the background unnoticed.

“And arrest the maid too,” the federal agent added smoothly, not even turning around as he pointed directly at Clara. “Clara Hayes, or whatever alias you’re using this week. Outstanding warrants in three states for corporate espionage and financial manipulation.”

Before Clara could make a run for the gate, two agents flanked her instantly, their hands gripping her shoulders with vice-like firmness as they forced her wrists behind her back.

Eleanor let out a long, ragged breath, her knees finally buckling slightly as the adrenaline drained from her system. She gripped the edge of the stone patio to steady herself, watching as the entire elaborate house of cards collapsed into handcuffs and federal paperwork under the flashing lights.

The federal agent turned his attention to Eleanor, offering a respectful nod. “Ms. Vance? We have your actual paperwork secured in the vault downtown. The corporate takeover was intercepted forty-eight hours ago. We let them play their hand tonight so we could catch the entire syndicate in the act.”

Eleanor stared at the agent, the exhaustion pulling deep shadows beneath her eyes, but a quiet, powerful sense of vindication began to warm her chest.

“Thank you,” Eleanor whispered, turning her gaze slowly toward the shimmering, artificial blue water of the swimming pool.
