Chapter 1 - The Accusation at Midnight

The artificial blue light of the backyard swimming pool cast long, jittery shadows across the manicured stone patio, illuminating the raw panic freezing the air. Eleanor Vance stood rigid in her short-sleeved emerald dress, her arms tightly crossed over her chest, black heels clicking softly against the concrete as she shifted her weight. Just a few feet away, Clara stood drenched to the skin, kneeling shivering in her gray maid’s uniform with its soiled white collar and apron, her wet hair plastered to her trembling cheeks. Clara looked up with wide, tearful, desperate eyes, her chest heaving as she tried to catch her breath after the sudden plunge into the freezing chlorine.
Above them both hovered Julianne Thorne, a vision of wealthy fury in a sleeveless maroon dress and expensive brown heels. Julianne clutched a small bundle tight against her chest—a baby wrapped securely in a pristine white blanket, safe for the moment, but breathing in frantic, shallow gasps.
“She pushed him in,” Julianne shrieked, her voice cracking with a manic, rehearsed edge as she pointed a manicured finger down at the kneeling girl. “I saw her do it! With my own eyes!”
“I jumped in to save him!” Clara choked out, her voice raw and breaking as she threw her hands up defensively. “I pulled him out of the water! I swear to God!”
Eleanor turned her head sharply, her dark eyes narrowing as she looked between the two women. “Is that true?” she demanded, her voice cutting through the humid night air like a blade.
Julianne glared down fiercely, her face flushing a deep, mottled red. “Look at her, she’s lying to save her own skin!” Julianne shouted defensively, taking a half-step forward while shielding the white bundle. “What is going on here?”

The heavy silence that followed was suffocating, broken only by the gentle lapping of water against the pool tiles. Eleanor slowly dropped her arms to her sides, her gaze locking onto Clara’s wet pocket, where a corner of a familiar leather-bound notebook was visibly protruding from the damp gray fabric.
