Chapter 5

The unmarked medical facility sat tucked away behind a dense grove of weeping willows on the outskirts of the city, a discreet sanctuary reserved for the elite who valued privacy above all else. As the town car glided smoothly to a halt beneath the covered portico, medical staff materialized instantly like ghosts, wheeling out a specialized pediatric gurney. Julian was out of the car and holding the door open before the vehicle had even completely settled in park. He carefully helped Clara lift Sophie onto the rolling bed, his movements steady, practiced, and entirely devoid of the awkwardness that usually plagued him in high-stress social environments.
"Dr. Vance is already scrubbed in," one of the senior physicians informed Julian respectfully, nodding to Clara with a polite tip of his head. "We have the genetic profiling from the previous generation on file. We can begin the transfusion protocol immediately."
Clara walked beside the gurney, her hand locked tightly around Sophie’s limp fingers, never letting go even as the automatic doors slid open to admit them into the sterile, brightly lit corridor of the intensive care wing. Julian started to follow, but stopped abruptly at the yellow line painted on the linoleum floor, recognizing the boundary of the restricted family zone. He watched as Clara disappeared through the swinging double doors, the purple silk of her gown sweeping across the floor before vanishing into the stark white interior. He stood alone in the hallway, the fluorescent lights buzzing faintly overhead, feeling the heavy isolation of a man who belonged to neither world—neither the glittering, superficial society he had left behind in the ballroom, nor the intimate, protective circle of family that he was permanently barred from entering.
Marcus appeared down the hall a few moments later, his trench coat damp from the evening mist, holding two paper cups of black coffee. He wordlessly extended one toward Julian, who took it mechanically without drinking.
"The board is calling my phone every two minutes," Marcus said quietly, leaning against the wall beside his employer. "They want a statement regarding the scene you caused at the gala. The rumor mill is saying you assaulted a child, Julian. The tabloids have already published grainy photos of you standing over the little girl while Clara screamed."
"Let them talk," Julian muttered, staring blankly at the closed doors where Sophie was currently fighting for her life. "Reputations can be rebuilt, or they can burn to the ground for all I care. Right now, that child is breathing because we got her here in time. That’s the only metric that matters."

Marcus sipped his coffee, studying Julian’s profile with a mixture of professional concern and personal loyalty. "And Clara? Once the girl stabilizes, do you honestly believe she’s going to let you stay in their lives? She looked at you tonight like she wanted to tear your throat out with her bare hands."
"She hates me, Marcus, and she has every right to," Julian replied softly, his voice heavy with a profound, aching resignation. "I brought the poison into our lives a decade ago, and it followed us like a shadow. But if she needs a villain to hate so she can stay strong for Sophie, I’ll gladly play that part, as long as they are safe behind these walls."
