Chapter 4

The leather interior of the private town car smelled faintly of cedarwood and expensive leather, a stark contrast to the sterile anxiety pressing down inside the cabin. Sophie stirred fitfully on the plush back seat, her head resting in Clara’s lap while Clara rhythmically stroked the girl's tangled hair with trembling fingers. In the front passenger seat, Julian sat turned around, watching them with an expression of profound, quiet anguish that didn't match the cold reputation the public assigned to him. He handed a small, silver-capped vial and a sterile dropper back to Clara through the gap in the partition.
"It’s a synthesized stabilizer," Julian said quietly, his voice pitched low to avoid waking the restless child. "Marcus had it couriered from the research lab an hour ago when I called him from the corridor. It’s the only compound known to slow the cellular breakdown until we reach the specialized hematology ward."
Clara took the vial, her fingers brushing against Julian’s cold skin. She stared at the translucent liquid inside with deep suspicion. "How do I know this isn't the reverse? How do I know you aren't finishing what your uncle started years ago, ensuring there’s no one left to contest the estate?"
Julian flinched, the words striking him harder than any physical blow could have. He looked directly into Clara’s fierce, tear-bright eyes, holding her gaze without a flicker of evasion. "If I wanted the estate, Clara, I wouldn't have spent the last ten years secretly funding your daughter's trust fund through anonymous shell companies just to ensure she had the best pediatric care money could buy. You thought your patrons were generous philanthropists? It was me, making sure you never had to choose between rent and medicine when the first warning signs appeared."
Clara froze, the vial hovering inches from Sophie’s pale lips. The revelation hit her with the force of a tidal wave, unravelling years of carefully constructed resentment and independence. "You... you were the anonymous benefactor? Why?"
May you like
"Because when I walked away from you to protect you from the corporate crossfire of my family’s legal battles, I swore I wouldn't let my absence destroy the people I loved," Julian answered, his voice cracking slightly on the last word. "I couldn't protect you from the gossip, but I could make sure Sophie had a fighting chance if the curse caught up to her."
Sophie let out a soft, distressed moan, her small body arching slightly as another wave of pain racked her frame. The reality of the present moment violently yanked Clara back from the precipice of the past. Without another word of argument, she uncapped the dropper, measured the exact dose Julian indicated, and carefully administered the medication beneath the child's tongue. Within seconds, the frantic arching of Sophie’s spine subsided, her breathing deepening into a steady, albeit weak, rhythm as the stabilizer took effect. Clara closed her eyes, a single tear finally escaping to track a clean path down her powdered cheek, realizing that her survival—and her daughter’s—now depended entirely on the man she had sworn to destroy.
