Chapter 11

The rain beat a relentless tattoo against the floor-to-ceiling windows of Julian’s penthouse apartment high above the city skyline. Inside, the expansive living room was bathed in the warm, golden glow of recessed lighting, but the mood was arctic. Clara stood by the fireplace, watching the flames crackle while Julian paced the hardwood floor, his coat discarded, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. Marcus sat at the glass coffee table, his laptop open, displaying a complex network of encrypted financial ledgers and corporate ownership charts.

"If we go public with Pendelton’s involvement, the SEC will freeze the entire conglomerate within twenty-four hours," Marcus explained, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "But it will also expose every hidden shell company Julian used to fund Clara and Sophie’s protection over the last decade. The press will have a field day tearing apart both your pasts."

"I don't care about the press anymore," Clara said firmly, turning away from the fireplace to face them both. Her eyes burned with the same fierce resolve she had shown on the ballroom floor. "For ten years, I lived in fear of being found, hiding my daughter’s heritage just to keep her safe from monsters in expensive suits. I’m done hiding. If exposing the truth is the only way to get the permanent antidote for Sophie, then burn it all down."

Julian stopped pacing and looked at Clara, a profound sense of awe and deep-rooted love washing over him. He walked over to her, stopping just short of touching her, letting her set the boundaries. "Clara, once this goes out, there’s no turning back. Pendelton has deep political connections. He’ll fight dirty."

"Let him," Clara replied, stepping closer to Julian and placing her hand gently over his clenched fist, her fingers uncurling his tight grip until her palm rested flat against his. "We survived his shadow for ten years. Together, we can take him out into the light."

Julian looked down at their joined hands, feeling the last remaining ice in his heart melt away completely. He turned his hand over, interlocking his fingers with hers. "Marcus, execute the transfer. Upload the encrypted files to the federal investigators and release the investigative report to the independent financial journalists we vetted last month. Let's crash his empire the exact same way he tried to crash ours."

Marcus hit a final key on his laptop, a soft chime confirming the upload echoing quietly in the spacious room. "Files transmitted. The story goes live across every major news network at six o'clock tomorrow morning, right before the opening bell. Pendelton won't know what hit him until the federal agents are knocking on his mahogany doors."
