Chapter 10

The quiet sanctuary of the clinic was shattered late that evening when Marcus walked into the waiting area holding a thick manila folder stamped with confidential legal seals. Julian, who had been reviewing medical charts by the window, turned immediately at the sound of the heavy footsteps. Clara looked up from where she sat reading a storybook to a drowsy Sophie in the adjoining room. She stepped out into the hallway, pulling the door partially closed so as not to wake the child.

"What is it, Marcus?" Clara asked, her voice tense, sensing the grim air surrounding the lawyer.

Marcus laid the folder on the central table and opened it to reveal a series of financial wire transfers and corporate registry documents. "I had our forensic accountants dig into the initial stock sell-off that triggered the crash in Julian's family trust twenty years ago—the one that forced Julian to go into hiding and cut ties with you, Clara."

Julian stepped closer, his eyes scanning the technical jargon on the pages. "And?"

"It wasn't a natural market correction," Marcus said grimly, pointing a finger at a highlighted corporate entity registered offshore in the Cayman Islands. "Your uncle didn't just try to ruin your inheritance, Julian. He liquidated your family’s primary medical patents—the exact life-saving compounds designed to treat the rare genetic metabolic disorder you and Sophie carry. He sold them to a pharmaceutical conglomerate that deliberately shelved the formula to drive up the market value of inferior symptom-management drugs."

Clara gasped, covering her mouth with her hand as the horrifying puzzle pieces clicked into place in her mind. "My father... your uncle... they traded human lives for corporate stock."

"Worse than that," Marcus continued, turning another page. "The conglomerate that bought the patents is currently chaired by Arthur Pendelton—the same man sitting at the head of Julian’s board right now. He’s the one who orchestrated the hostile takeover of your family’s assets a decade ago, Clara, forcing you into hiding to protect your unborn child from being targeted as the legal heir to those stolen patents."

Julian felt a cold, blinding rage ignite deep within his chest, washing away every ounce of corporate diplomacy he had maintained over the past twenty-four hours. The man who sat across from him in the boardroom every morning, the elder statesman of his company, was the architect of his family’s destruction and the direct cause of Sophie’s life-threatening illness. "He didn't just try to ruin us," Julian whispered, his voice shaking with a terrifying, controlled fury. "He tried to murder us slowly, year by year, by withholding the cure."

"And he’s still doing it," Marcus added quietly. "The board meeting today wasn't about the PR scandal from the gala. Pendelton used the media backlash as leverage to force you out so he could acquire the remaining voting shares of your trust and permanently bury the research foundation before it could recreate the stolen formula."
