Chapter 2

The heavy mahogany doors of the grand ballroom finally swung shut behind Julian as he retreated into the dimly lit corridor, leaving the murmuring crowd and the accusing glare of Clara behind him. The cool air of the antechamber hit his flushed face like a dash of cold water, yet it did little to clear the chaotic storm raging in his mind. Across the polished parquet floor, Marcus, Julian’s lifelong legal counsel and confidant, stepped out from the shadows of a velvet-draped alcove, his expression grim and calculating. Marcus adjusted his silver-rimmed glasses, taking in the disheveled state of Julian’s maroon bowtie and the frantic pulse visible in the hollow of his throat.

"You handled that like a rookie, Julian," Marcus murmured, his voice a low baritone that barely carried over the distant, muffled strains of the silent party. "The entire eastern seaboard’s elite just watched Clara Vance publicly brand you a monster. By morning, the board will freeze your assets, and the press will be camping out on your front lawn."

Julian shook his head, leaning back against the cool wood-paneled wall and closing his eyes for a brief second. "You don't understand, Marcus. It wasn't about the optics. Sophie... the girl fell. Not because I touched her, but because she looked dizzy. Exactly the way her mother did twenty years ago before the doctors finally figured out what was poisoning her bloodstream."

Marcus went completely still, the calculating glint in his eyes instantly replaced by genuine shock. "Are you telling me the genetic anomaly is manifesting in the child? Clara swore she cut all ties with your side of the family to keep the girl safe from our medical history."

"She thinks I did something to her," Julian whispered, opening his eyes to stare at the expensive Persian rug beneath his polished shoes. "She thinks I’m trying to eliminate the last heir to the trust fund, just like my uncle tried to do to us when we were kids. Clara doesn't know about the medical relapse; she only knows that I was standing too close when Sophie collapsed, and my face gave away my panic before I could mask it."

"Then we have a massive PR nightmare mixed with a lethal medical emergency," Marcus said practically, already pulling a sleek smartphone from his tailored jacket pocket. "If Sophie has inherited the latent toxicity, Clara is going to try to handle it alone, in secret, just to keep the child out of your orbit. And without proper treatment, that little girl won't survive the week. You can't let Clara lock you out, Julian. Pride will get that child killed."

Julian pushed off the wall, a sudden, desperate resolve hardening his features. "She won't listen to me. Not tonight. Not while she thinks I'm the architect of her daughter's pain."

"Then you find a way to make her listen," Marcus replied, gesturing toward the private exit that led to the gardens. "Before she packs up and disappears into the night with a sick child who needs your bloodline's rare antidote to live."
