Chapter 5 - The Hidden Barrel

The metallic click of the pistol echoed through the cavernous penthouse like a hammer striking an anvil. Elena froze in her tracks, her hand hovering mid-air, while Julian let out a pathetic whimper and dropped flat onto his stomach behind a heavy velvet armchair. The flashing red and blue lights from the police cruisers below danced wildly across the polished barrel of the gun as Marcus pulled it fully from his inner pocket.
His face was completely devoid of emotion, a chilling mask of absolute desperation. He didn't point it at the door where the heavy boots were marching closer; instead, he aimed the weapon directly at Clara’s chest.
“If I'm going down, Clara, you’re coming with me,” Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of all human warmth.
“No federal prison, no trial, no escape. You wanted this ending so badly? Here it is.”
Clara didn't scream. She didn't try to run. Her green eyes locked onto the dark circle of the gun barrel, and for a brief second, a hauntingly peaceful expression washed over her bruised features. She had anticipated violence, but seeing the weapon drawn in front of a dozen lingering witnesses pushed the reality of her danger into stark, terrifying relief.
“Go ahead, Marcus,” Clara whispered, taking a slow step forward toward the muzzle of the gun, her voice dripping with defiant venom.
“Every security camera in this penthouse is streaming live to an encrypted cloud server. The moment you pull that trigger, your execution will be broadcast straight to the FBI command center downstairs.”
Marcus’s finger tightened slightly on the trigger, his knuckles turning stark white. The vein in his forehead throbbed violently as he weighed the cost of murder against the certainty of life imprisonment.
“I’ll take my chances with a jury if it means wiping you off the earth permanently,” he growled, stepping closer, closing the distance between them until the barrel was inches from her collarbone.
Elena watched from the corner, her breathing shallow and frantic, her fingernails clawing uselessly at her own arms. She realized with sudden, sickening clarity that Marcus had completely lost his mind and was ready to destroy them all. Without thinking, Elena lunged forward, grabbing a heavy silver champagne bucket from the nearby bar cart and swinging it with all her might toward the back of Marcus’s head.

Before the heavy silver struck its target, the heavy oak double doors of the penthouse burst inward with a deafening crash, splintering wood flying everywhere as heavily armored tactical agents flooded the room screaming commands. But as the flashbang grenades rolled across the floor, a deafening gunshot rang out through the smoke.
