Chapter 2 - Echoes in the Dark

The crunch of bone against the plush wool carpet sounded deafening in the suddenly hushed penthouse. Clara bit her lower lip so hard a single bead of crimson welled up, but she refused to cry out. Marcus’s grip on her wrist remained ironclad, his thumb pressing purposefully into her pulse point as if measuring the exact speed of her mounting terror. Around them, the cocktail party had completely disintegrated into a swarm of frantic whispers and nervous shuffling. High-society faces that had smiled warmly just moments ago now turned away, pretending not to see the domestic violence playing out in plain sight among the diamonds and spilled champagne.
Julian remained frozen in the doorway, his dark blue suit rumpled from what appeared to be a desperate sprint up the building’s private service stairs. He pointed a trembling finger again, his chest heaving as he repeated the accusation that had just torn the evening wide open.
“The first fall failed!” Julian shouted louder this time, his voice cracking with adrenaline.
“And you thought doing it publicly would hide the truth, Marcus? Everyone here thinks she’s just clumsy, but I know what you arranged in the cabin last month!”
Marcus finally turned his head away from Clara, his expression transforming with terrifying speed from a cold abuser to a calm, collected executive. He released Clara’s wrist with a sharp shove that sent her sliding slightly further into the jagged glass. Rising smoothly to his feet, Marcus adjusted the cuffs of his white shirt, his eyes locked onto Julian with murderous intent.
“You’re drunk, Julian,” Marcus said, his voice dripping with smooth, fabricated concern.
“My wife tripped. Anyone with eyes can see the glass, the angle, the accident. Security will escort you out before you embarrass yourself further.”
Elena finally snapped out of her stupor. The dark maroon dress she wore seemed to absorb the dim, moody lighting as she glided forward, her heels clicking sharply against the marble entryway. Her face was a mask of calculated fury. She didn't look at Clara bleeding on the floor, nor did she look at Marcus. Instead, she stepped directly into Julian’s path, blocking his view. Elena’s voice was a lethal whisper, carrying easily across the silent room.
“Shut your mouth, Julian, unless you want the financial records of your offshore accounts leaked to the federal prosecutors before midnight.”
Julian stopped dead in his tracks, the color draining entirely from his face. He stared at Elena, realization dawning in his panicked eyes. Marcus smiled faintly, a dark, victorious smirk. On the floor, Clara slowly pushed herself up, wincing as a sharp shard of glass pierced her palm. She looked down at the bleeding wound, then slowly raised her head to stare directly at Marcus’s polished leather shoes. Beneath her breath, she muttered a single phrase that made Marcus's smile instantly vanish.
