Chapter 11 - The Maroon Silhouette

The name dropped into the quiet interrogation room like a lead weight. Clara didn't flinch, but her green eyes narrowed sharply as the puzzle pieces finally clicked into place. Elena—standing in her dark maroon dress at the cocktail party, watching the table shatter with cold calculation, rushing to silence anyone who threatened to expose the inner circle.
“Elena wasn't just a guest or a casual associate,” Clara said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy murmur.
“She’s the primary shareholder in Vance Enterprises’ overseas shell companies. If Marcus goes down for financial fraud, Elena loses billions in unlaundered capital.”
Agent Miller cursed under his breath, turning sharply toward the door.
“Where is she being held?” Miller barked, keying his radio.
“We transferred her to Holding Cell 4 down the hall twenty minutes ago,” the dispatcher’s voice crackled back through the small device on Miller’s shoulder.
“Check her cell right now!” Miller ordered, sprinting toward the exit with Clara trailing close behind him, ignoring the protests of the guards stationed outside the door.
The sterile concrete hallway of the federal holding facility echoed with the sound of their racing footsteps. Overhead fluorescent lights flickered violently as they rounded the corner toward Holding Cell 4. A heavy iron-barred door stood slightly ajar, the automated locking mechanism hanging limply from the wall, its wires cleanly severed with surgical precision.
Miller drew his sidearm instantly, pushing the heavy door wide open with his boot.
The cell was completely empty. The small metal cot was neatly made, but resting in the center of the lumpy mattress was a single, blood-stained piece of dark maroon fabric torn directly from the hem of a sleeveless dress. Splattered across the concrete wall above the bed, written in dark, drying crimson, was a single threatening message directed straight at Clara: YOU CAN'T BURY THE TRUTH EITHER.
Clara stepped slowly into the cell, staring at the message on the wall. A cold shiver ran down her spine. The handwriting wasn't Elena’s. It was jagged, rushed, and unmistakably masculine.
Agent Miller lowered his weapon slowly, his face etched with grim realization.
“She didn't escape on her own,” Miller muttered, staring at the severed wires of the electronic lock.
“Someone on the inside let her out. Someone with high-level clearance within the federal bureau.”

Before Miller could call for backup, the overhead security lights suddenly flickered and died completely, plunging the entire holding block into pitch blackness. Red emergency backup strobes instantly kicked on, casting long, eerie shadows across the concrete corridor. From somewhere down the dark hallway, a heavy iron security door slammed shut with a thunderous echo, followed by the chilling, unmistakable sound of approaching footsteps.
